Contemporary reports put the crowd at more than 96,000. That was a milestone for Swift’s own concert audience—not the MCG’s single-night attendance record.
What Swift said to the Melbourne crowd
Melbourne was the first stop on the Australian leg of The Eras Tour. During the opening show at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Friday, February 16, Swift told the audience: “This is the biggest show that we have done on this tour, or any tour, ever.” ABC News Australia reported the remark and said Swift had been told there were 96,000 people in the venue.
The Associated Press of Australia (AAP) described Swift as starstruck and overjoyed. It quoted her saying: “If I seem a bit like I’m losing my mind it’s about the fact that there are 96,000 people here tonight – it’s true.”
How many people attended the Melbourne shows?
ABC reported more than 96,000 people at the February 16 concert. In a later account, TIME reported 96,000 attendees at each of Swift’s three consecutive Melbourne shows, February 16–18—a reported total of 288,000 across the run. These are rounded figures reported by the outlets, not independently audited ticket counts.

Swift’s career milestone was not the MCG attendance record
Swift’s onstage comment described the biggest show she had done in her own touring career at that point. It did not mean that she had set the MCG’s single-night attendance record. TIME reported that Ed Sheeran drew around 109,500 people on each of two MCG nights in 2023. It also noted that Swift’s stage configuration occupied space that otherwise could have been used for seats. The figures describe different performances and reported crowd sizes; they should not be treated as a like-for-like capacity test.
The fan-made details of the night
Alongside the scale of the crowd, reports captured the concert’s fan culture: attendees wore colorful, sparkly outfits inspired by Swift’s musical eras, and made friendship bracelets to exchange or give to others. ABC News covered the outfits and bracelets; The Guardian also noted handmade bracelet swaps and fans complimenting one another’s outfits. These small rituals formed part of the event’s communal atmosphere, even as the headline number was the crowd of roughly 96,000.
