Taylor Swift announced The Tortured Poets Department while accepting the 2024 Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Album for Midnights. The new album was released on April 19, 2024; later that same night, Midnights won Album of the Year.
Which album did Taylor Swift announce at the Grammys?
Swift announced The Tortured Poets Department during her February 4, 2024 acceptance speech for Best Pop Vocal Album. She was accepting the award for Midnights, not for the album she was announcing. The Recording Academy’s Taylor Swift awards history and its 2024 Album of the Year results document the distinct award moments.
As reported by the Associated Press, Swift said: “My brand-new album comes out April 19. It’s called ‘The Tortured Poets Department.’ I’m going to go and post the cover right now backstage.” This is AP’s report of her announcement. Read AP’s contemporaneous report.
What happened with Midnights later that night?
Later in the ceremony, Midnights won Album of the Year. That made Swift the first and, as of the 2024 ceremony, only artist to win the category four times. Her winning albums were Fearless (2010), 1989 (2016), Folklore (2021), and Midnights (2024), according to the Recording Academy’s artist profile.
