Braun’s company acquired Big Machine Label Group in 2019, bringing those masters under its control. Swift objected, rerecorded several albums as “Taylor’s Version,” and announced in May 2025 that she had bought the original masters from Shamrock Capital.
Why the masters mattered
A master recording is a specific recorded performance. It is separate from the underlying composition and songwriting rights, so the dispute concerned control of the original recordings rather than every right associated with the songs.
The six albums involved were Taylor Swift, Fearless, Speak Now, Red, 1989, and Reputation. Swift had released them through Big Machine, the label that controlled their masters before the 2019 sale. The distinction matters: the later “Taylor’s Version” releases are newly made recordings, not the original masters.
What happened, and when
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| June 30, 2019 | Ithaca Holdings, Scooter Braun’s company, acquired Big Machine Label Group. The deal placed the first six albums’ masters among the assets controlled through the label. Swift said she learned of Braun’s purchase as it was announced publicly. The Washington Post reported on her response and Big Machine founder Scott Borchetta’s account. |
| November 2019 | Swift said she had been told she could not perform music from her first six albums at the American Music Awards and asked fans to contact artists managed by Braun. Big Machine denied saying she could not perform live and said it lacked the right to stop her. The parties disputed the scope of permissions; the available account does not establish a settled prohibition. Us Weekly’s timeline summarizes the dispute. |
| November 2020 | Braun sold the masters to Shamrock Capital. Swift said Braun’s team had not given her a price and that the masters were not for sale to her. Accounts of the negotiations differ. Us Weekly’s timeline and Variety Australia’s report on Braun’s account describe the conflicting versions. |
| 2021–2023 | Swift released four rerecordings: Fearless (Taylor’s Version) in April 2021, Red (Taylor’s Version) in November 2021, Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) in July 2023, and 1989 (Taylor’s Version) in October 2023. These are new recordings, distinct from the original masters. Us Weekly’s timeline lists the releases. |
| 2024 | The Associated Press reported that Braun announced an end to his direct work as a music manager after 23 years and said he would focus on roles at HYBE and HYBE America. This was a separate career development, not the cause of the masters dispute. Associated Press coverage |
| May 2025 | Swift announced she had bought the original masters from Shamrock, which acquired them from Braun’s company in 2020. She also said she regained ownership of concert films, album artwork, photography, and unreleased songs. Braun’s response, as reported by Us Weekly, was: “I am happy for her.” NPR reported the sale; Us Weekly’s timeline reports Braun’s reaction. |
How Swift and Braun described the conflict
Swift’s account
In a Tumblr statement responding to the 2019 sale, Swift wrote, “This is my worst case scenario.” She said she had sought the chance to own her work and learned of Braun’s purchase when it became public: “I learned about Scooter Braun’s purchase of my masters as it was announced to the world.” The Washington Post reported her statement.

Swift also connected her objection to her past experiences with Braun, writing, “All I could think about was the incessant, manipulative bullying I’ve received at his hands for years.” That is her allegation and characterization, not an independently established finding. She said Big Machine had offered her a route to earn albums back by signing again with the label rather than giving her ownership outright.
Borchetta’s and Braun’s accounts
Borchetta disputed Swift’s claim that she had no opportunity to own the masters, saying she had opportunities and chose to leave Big Machine. Braun later said he regretted Swift’s reaction and described details of her account as “not based on anything factual.” In a 2021 interview, he said he had asked her to meet. Us Weekly summarizes Braun’s remarks; The Washington Post reported Borchetta’s response.

In 2025, Braun’s account was that Swift passed on a chance to buy the masters before they were sold to Shamrock. The two sides’ descriptions of the negotiations remain in conflict, and the available reporting does not reconcile them. The established sequence is the transfer of the original masters, Swift’s objection, her rerecording strategy, and her later reacquisition.
Why Swift made the rerecordings
Rerecording created new master recordings of songs from the earlier albums. That gave Swift new versions she could control separately from the original recordings then held by other owners. The rerecordings did not erase or replace the originals; both versions exist, and the releases identify the new recordings as “Taylor’s Version.”

Braun publicly welcomed the outcome, while his and Swift’s earlier accounts of the negotiations remained different.
