Taylor Swift and Matty Healy’s Relationship Timeline has two distinct phases: disputed rumors and apparent flirtation in late 2014, then a brief, reported romance in spring 2023. Healy denied dating Swift in 2016; outlets reported their 2023 breakup on June 5, and no public evidence proves a continuous 10-year relationship.
The public record is therefore more complicated—and narrower—than the popular “10-year situationship” version. The 2014 chapter should be labeled rumored or disputed, while the 2023 chapter was widely reported as romantic, short-lived and never fully explained by either performer in a joint public statement.
Key takeaways
- The Taylor Swift and Matty Healy relationship timeline contains a disputed late-2014 rumor phase and a separately reported romance in spring 2023.
- Healy wrote in a 2016 clarification, “I didn’t even date Taylor,” so a confirmed 2014 relationship cannot be stated as fact.
- Swift and Healy publicly reconnected when Swift appeared with The 1975 in London in January 2023.
- Entertainment outlets reported their breakup on June 5, 2023, after several weeks of intense public attention.
- Critics and listeners interpreted songs on Swift’s April 19, 2024 album The Tortured Poets Department as relating partly to Healy, but Swift did not confirm a track-by-track explanation.
Were Taylor Swift and Matty Healy together in 2014?
Taylor Swift and Matty Healy were first publicly linked in late 2014, but the available evidence supports concert-related flirtation and dating rumors more clearly than a confirmed, exclusive relationship. Swift attended a The 1975 concert in Los Angeles and was seen associated with the band’s merchandise. Contemporary coverage and later timelines also described an exchange of contact information and apparent mutual interest.
Those details explain why the rumor became persistent, but they do not establish that Swift and Healy became a couple. ELLE’s relationship timeline and British Vogue’s retrospective timeline present the period as an alleged or rumored connection rather than a publicly confirmed relationship.

What did Matty Healy say about Taylor Swift in 2016?
Matty Healy publicly disputed the idea that he and Swift had dated. After a 2016 Q magazine interview prompted coverage of his comments about dating Swift, Healy objected that the remark had been taken out of context. In a clarification reported by ELLE, Healy wrote: “I didn’t even date Taylor.”
That first-person denial is the essential counterpoint to later entertainment articles that casually describe 2014 as a brief romance. The most accurate description is that Swift and Healy were linked by rumors and apparent flirtation in late 2014, while Healy’s contemporaneous public position was that they did not date.
| Version of the story | Evidence | What can responsibly be said |
|---|---|---|
| They dated in 2014 | Concert appearances, merchandise, reported contact exchange and flirtation | Commonly repeated, but not confirmed by Swift and disputed by Healy |
| They had no personal connection | Healy’s 2016 statement that he “didn’t even date Taylor” | Supports his denial of a relationship, but does not prove there was no interaction |
| They reunited romantically in 2023 | Public appearances, reported visits and entertainment reporting | Reported as a short-lived romance or fling, without a detailed joint account |
| They had a continuous 10-year relationship | No cited public record establishing continuity between 2014 and 2023 | Not supported by the available evidence |
How did Taylor Swift and Matty Healy reconnect in 2023?
Swift and Healy’s public reconnection began with music rather than a confirmed romantic announcement. Swift appeared onstage with The 1975 in London in January 2023, reviving interest in their earlier history. The appearance showed a public professional and social connection, but it did not by itself prove that the pair had resumed a romance.
Reports of Swift’s separation from actor Joe Alwyn circulated in April 2023 after their six-year relationship. The timing preceded the public reports about Swift and Healy, but the available sources do not establish the private chronology of Swift’s communications with Healy, overlap between the relationships, or infidelity. Public timing is not proof of private conduct.

What happened between Taylor Swift and Matty Healy in May 2023?
In early May 2023, entertainment outlets reported that Swift and Healy were romantically involved. Healy attended Swift’s Nashville Eras Tour performances, and coverage described the pair as spending time together. Reports and photographs of visits to Swift’s home made the connection more visible.
On May 16, 2023, Swift and Healy were photographed leaving or visiting Electric Lady Studios in Manhattan. The photograph establishes public association, not the precise nature, duration, or exclusivity of the relationship. Harper’s Bazaar’s timeline places those sightings within the period when the relationship was being widely reported.
The relationship also drew unusually intense public reaction because Healy’s past comments and conduct were being discussed at the same time. In particular, remarks about Ice Spice from a February 2023 podcast appearance resurfaced during the May coverage. That controversy helps explain the scale of the debate, but it does not alter the basic chronology or establish the private terms of the relationship.
When did Taylor Swift and Matty Healy break up?
Multiple outlets reported on June 5, 2023, that Swift and Healy had split. Contemporary coverage characterized the connection as short-lived, casual, or a fling. The Los Angeles Times’ June 5, 2023 report is the key date for the publicly reported end of the relationship.

Did Taylor Swift and Matty Healy have a 10-year relationship?
No reliable public evidence establishes that Taylor Swift and Matty Healy had a continuous 10-year relationship. The record shows a gap between the late-2014 rumors and the January-to-May 2023 public reconnection, followed by a breakup reported on June 5, 2023.
The phrase “10-year situationship” compresses two different periods into one continuous narrative. That wording goes beyond the evidence because it assumes an undisclosed relationship during the years for which the cited public record does not establish ongoing contact or romance.
Which Taylor Swift songs are interpreted as being about Matty Healy?
Critics and listeners have interpreted several songs on The Tortured Poets Department as relating to Healy, especially the title track and “But Daddy I Love Him.” Swift released the album on April 19, 2024, and reviews discussed its treatment of former flames, public judgment and celebrity pressure. The Guardian’s contemporaneous coverage of the album describes the broader lyrical and cultural context.

Interpretation is not confirmation. Swift has not provided an official track-by-track statement establishing Healy as the subject of every song discussed by fans and critics. Swift’s songwriting can combine autobiographical material, persona, dramatic compression and deliberate ambiguity, so the responsible wording is that particular songs are widely interpreted as relating to Healy—not that Swift confirmed each identification.
The album belongs in the aftermath of the relationship timeline, not as evidence that Swift and Healy were still together in 2024. Later coverage focused on the cultural and songwriting implications of the 2023 connection rather than reporting a renewed romance. The Guardian’s album review also treats the songs as part of a wider story about fame, fans and former relationships.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is confirmed, reported and speculative?
The clearest way to read the story is to separate evidence types. A first-person statement has a different evidentiary weight from an anonymous-source report; a photograph proves association but not exclusivity; and a fan theory about a lyric is an interpretation rather than a documented fact.
- Direct statement: Healy’s 2016 clarification that he did not date Swift directly disputes the strongest version of the 2014 story.
- Public event: Swift’s January 2023 appearance with The 1975 is confirmed as a performance and public reconnection, not proof of romance.
- Public sightings: Healy’s attendance at Swift’s May 2023 Nashville performances and the New York sightings support reports that they were spending time together.
- Named-publication reporting: Multiple outlets reported the June 5, 2023 breakup.
- Critical interpretation: Songs on The Tortured Poets Department have been linked to Healy by critics and listeners, but the links remain interpretations without a complete official explanation.
What really happened between Taylor Swift and Matty Healy?
The defensible conclusion is not a secret decade-long romance. Swift and Healy were first linked through rumors and apparent flirtation around late 2014, Healy denied that they had dated in 2016, and the pair had a separately reported, brief romantic connection in spring 2023. Outlets reported their breakup on June 5, 2023, while neither performer publicly explained the relationship’s terms or private ending in detail.
