Jeff Conaway, who played Kenickie in Grease and Bobby Wheeler on Taxi, died on May 27, 2011, at age 60. Early reports focused on pneumonia; a later Los Angeles County coroner’s finding, reported by the Los Angeles Times, described his death as accidental and listed several contributing conditions.
When and where did Jeff Conaway die?
Conaway died May 27, 2011, at Encino Tarzana Medical Center. The Television Academy reported that he had been hospitalized in a coma since May 11. The Television Academy’s account records the date and place of his death and the length of his hospitalization.
What was reported about the cause of his death?
Early reports: hospitalization and pneumonia
Contemporaneous coverage said Conaway had been found unconscious and hospitalized in May 2011, later entering a medically induced coma. The Los Angeles Times obituary reported that he died after being hospitalized with pneumonia. Those early reports described the circumstances at the time; they were not a complete account of the later coroner findings.
Later coroner findings
In October 2011, the Los Angeles Times reported that the Los Angeles County coroner ruled Conaway’s death accidental and identified multiple contributing conditions: septic emboli, aortic valve endocarditis, coronary artery disease, pneumonia and encephalopathy. The report said the coroner did not perform a toxicology test during the four-month investigation. The findings therefore do not support reducing his death to a claim that one particular drug alone caused it. The later report on the coroner’s findings provides that distinction.

Grease: Kenickie
Conaway played Kenickie, the tough-talking Rydell High student, in the 1978 film Grease. His connection to the musical began earlier: he had appeared in the Broadway production before the film adaptation.
Taxi: Bobby Wheeler
In 1978, Conaway began playing Bobby Wheeler on the television comedy Taxi, a struggling actor who works as a cab driver. The Television Academy lists his starring run on the series as 1978–1981. Conaway’s later career
Later in his career, Conaway appeared on Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew. The Los Angeles Times obituary also described his publicly discussed substance-use problems and prior back surgery. Those biographical details should be kept separate from the coroner’s account: the reported findings identify several contributing medical conditions, and the coroner did not perform a toxicology test.
In an interview with the Associated Press in 1985, quoted by the Los Angeles Times, Conaway said of his experience on Taxi: “Hollywood can be a terrible place when you’re depressed. The pits.” The obituary attributes the remark to that earlier interview.
