She was 59. Best known for her cartwheels across the hoods of Jaguars in Whitesnake’s “Here I Go Again” video, Kitaen also appeared in RATT videos, films and television roles across several decades.
Why Tawny Kitaen is remembered for “Here I Go Again”
Whitesnake’s 1987 video for “Here I Go Again” made Kitaen one of the most recognizable faces of the MTV era. At the opening, she performs cartwheels on the hood of a parked Jaguar; the video also features her on a second Jaguar. The striking image became closely associated with the song and the band. Lady Gaga later called the car-top moment “one of the greatest moments in video history,” according to the Los Angeles Times.
“Here I Go Again” was not her only work with Whitesnake. Kitaen also appeared in the band’s videos for “Still of the Night,” “Is This Love” and “The Deeper the Love.” Her music-video career had begun with RATT: she appeared in “Back for More” and on covers for RATT releases. The Television Academy’s biography places those RATT appearances before her better-known Whitesnake videos.

Film roles
Kitaen was born Julie Kitaen in San Diego on August 5, 1961. She worked as an actress and model, with film credits that included the 1984 comedy Bachelor Party and the 1986 horror film Witchboard. These roles gave her a screen career beyond the music videos that later defined her public image.

Kitaen was briefly married to Whitesnake singer David Coverdale, from 1989 to 1991. Her public image was often shaped by attention to high-profile relationships and personal struggles, sometimes at the expense of discussion of her work. Her brother Jordan Kitaen told the Los Angeles Times, “She didn’t have patience for the drudgery of life.”

Her place in pop culture is closely tied to a single unforgettable visual: a performer turning a music video’s parked cars into a stage. But the video-star image sat alongside a broader career in film, television and music videos, from RATT and Whitesnake to Bachelor Party, Witchboard and television work that continued beyond the height of her 1980s fame.
