Tate McRae’s third album, So Close To What, debuted at No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard 200 and the Billboard Canadian Albums chart. Billboard Canada reported 177,000 first-frame units for its U.S. debut, citing Luminate. The result was not universal across markets: the album peaked at No. 2 on the UK Official Albums Chart.
Where did So Close To What reach No. 1?
Released through RCA Records on February 21, 2025, So Close To What was McRae’s third album, according to Sony Music Canada. It debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart dated March 8, 2025, and also reached No. 1 on the Billboard Canadian Albums chart, as Billboard Canada reported.
Those are two distinct chart results, not evidence that the album topped charts in every country. In the UK, the Official Charts Company records a No. 2 peak on the Official Albums Chart, with its first chart date listed as March 6, 2025.
| Market and chart | Peak | Chart detail |
|---|---|---|
| United States — Billboard 200 | No. 1 | Debut on the chart dated March 8, 2025; 177,000 first-frame units reported by Billboard Canada, citing Luminate. |
| Canada — Billboard Canadian Albums | No. 1 | Reported by Billboard Canada. |
| United Kingdom — Official Albums Chart | No. 2 | First chart date: March 6, 2025, according to the Official Charts Company. |
What does the 177,000 figure mean?
Billboard Canada reported 177,000 units for the album’s first chart frame on the Billboard 200, attributing the figure to Luminate. It is a first-frame unit total—not a figure established as 177,000 pure album sales. The report does not provide a sales-versus-streaming breakdown, so the number should not be recast as a sales-only result.
