Task: Season 1 is a seven-episode HBO crime drama about an FBI task force hunting the people behind a series of violent robberies in the working-class suburbs of Philadelphia. Led by Mark Ruffalo’s Tom Brandis, the investigation unfolds alongside the family and economic pressures surrounding a suspected robber played by Tom Pelphrey.

Task: Season 1 is a seven-episode HBO crime drama about an FBI task force hunting the people behind a series of violent robberies in the working-class suburbs of Philadelphia. The investigation is led by FBI agent Tom Brandis, played by Mark Ruffalo, while Tom Pelphrey plays a family man whose ordinary domestic life is bound up with the crimes.

That dual perspective is the key to the series. Task is not just a procedural mystery about identifying a culprit. It places the law-enforcement pursuit alongside grief, family loyalty, economic pressure, trauma, and the compromises people make when survival and obligation collide. The result is a grim, character-first crime drama with a strong sense of place.

What is Task: Season 1 about?

At the center of Season 1 is an FBI task force assembled to stop a string of violent robberies. Brandis leads the investigation, attempting to understand the pattern behind the crimes and identify the people responsible before another robbery takes place.

#1 Best Overall

On the other side of the case is a seemingly ordinary family man, played by Pelphrey, who is connected to the robbery operation. The series uses that contrast to make the case feel personal rather than abstract: the investigators are pursuing suspects, but the suspects are also parents, partners, neighbors, and people carrying histories of loss and financial strain.

This makes Task better described as a morally complicated cat-and-mouse drama than as a conventional whodunit. The suspense comes not only from what the task force will discover, but from how the characters justify their decisions and what those decisions cost the people around them.

The Philadelphia-area setting is equally important. The series focuses on working-class suburban communities rather than treating the location as interchangeable scenery. Homes, neighborhoods, family relationships, and economic circumstances all shape the choices made by both the people investigating the crimes and those committing them.

Who stars in Task?

Mark Ruffalo leads the series as FBI agent Tom Brandis. Brandis is the central investigator and the figure responsible for bringing the task force together, but the show gives substantial attention to the emotional and personal pressures affecting the people on both sides of the case.

Tom Pelphrey plays the family man at the center of the robbery story. His performance is a major part of the show’s tension: the character is not presented as a detached criminal archetype, but as someone whose family circumstances and moral choices are inseparable from the crimes.

The announced ensemble also includes:

  • Emilia Jones
  • Jamie McShane
  • Sam Keeley
  • Thuso Mbedu
  • Fabien Frankel
  • Alison Oliver
  • Raúl Castillo
  • Silvia Dionicio
  • Phoebe Fox
  • Martha Plimpton

The ensemble is one reason the show feels broader than a single-investigator thriller. The task force, the families connected to the robberies, and the wider community all contribute to the story’s sense of pressure and consequence.

Who created the series?

Brad Ingelsby created, wrote, and served as showrunner on Task. He is also associated with Mare of Easttown, another Pennsylvania-centered crime drama built around damaged characters, regional identity, and difficult personal histories.

Task: Season 1 DVD | Mark Ruffalo
  • Mark Ruffalo, Emilia Jones, Fabien Frankel

That connection makes Task an obvious choice for viewers who appreciated Mare of Easttown, but the two shows are not part of the same story. Task is a separate series with its own characters, a different FBI task-force structure, and a robbery-centered premise.

Jeremiah Zagar and Salli Richardson-Whitfield are credited as directors and executive producers. Mark Roybal and Paul Lee produce for wiip, with Mark Ruffalo, David Crockett, and Ron Schmidt also serving as executive producers. Nicole Jordan-Webber and Jeremy Yaches are credited as co-executive producers for Public Record.

How many episodes are in Season 1?

Task: Season 1 has seven episodes. The season premiered in the United States on HBO on September 7, 2025, at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT, with episodes released weekly rather than all at once.

Seven episodes gives the season room to develop both halves of its premise: the FBI investigation and the family-centered story surrounding the robberies. It is substantial enough for the characters’ histories and relationships to matter, while remaining shorter than a typical multi-season network procedural.

Where can you watch Task: Season 1?

In the United States, the series premiered on HBO and was made available through HBO’s streaming service, now branded around Max. • Digital purchase: Listings have been reported through Amazon Video, the Apple TV Store, and Fandango At Home; confirm current rights and pricing before purchasing.
  • Season length: Seven episodes.
  • Geography: This information is for the United States. Availability may differ elsewhere.

The article’s researched listings also identified digital purchase options through Amazon Video, Apple TV Store, and Fandango At Home. Those options should be treated as changeable rather than permanent: individual episodes, full-season purchases, prices, and regional rights can vary.

Is Task worth watching?

For viewers who like serious, character-driven crime dramas, yes, Season 1 is a strong choice. The series combines a recognizable FBI pursuit with a more intimate examination of family obligation and economic pressure. It is particularly well suited to viewers who prefer crime stories that ask why people cross moral lines rather than treating criminal behavior as a puzzle to be solved.

The critical response has been strongly favorable. In the researched Rotten Tomatoes snapshot, Season 1 held a 96% Tomatometer score from 83 reviews and a 77% audience score. Those figures are dynamic and may change, so they should be rechecked before publication or used as a permanent measure of quality.

Reviews have especially highlighted Ruffalo and Pelphrey, the ensemble performances, the Pennsylvania setting, and the show’s moral complexity. The reception is not completely uniform, however. Some criticism has suggested that portions of the later plotting and certain twists feel more engineered than organically produced by the characters’ earlier decisions.

That qualification is useful because Task is not best understood as a flawless puzzle-box thriller. Its greatest strengths are atmosphere, performance, character psychology, and the pressure created by placing an official investigation next to a family struggling with its own circumstances.

What kind of crime drama is it?

Task belongs to the prestige crime-drama tradition, but its emphasis is different from a straightforward police procedural. The FBI operation provides momentum and structure, while the family story supplies the emotional stakes.

Expect:

  • A methodical investigation into violent robberies.
  • A tense relationship between investigators and suspects.
  • Strong attention to family loyalty and personal grief.
  • Working-class Philadelphia-suburban settings and pressures.
  • Violence, criminal activity, trauma, and emotionally difficult family circumstances.
  • Characters whose choices are morally compromised rather than simply heroic or villainous.

The season is rated TV-MA in the United States. It is not a light mystery or a conventional comfort-watch crime series.

Spoiler warning

This guide intentionally remains spoiler-light. Detailed discussion of the season’s twists, character outcomes, and ending should be kept separate from the basic premise and clearly labeled as containing spoilers. The central appeal depends on watching the investigation and the family story unfold, so revealing major developments here would undercut the experience.

Will there be a Season 2?

HBO announced a second season in November 2025, according to associated reporting. That means Season 1 should be described as the first completed season of the Task property, not automatically as a self-contained miniseries or a definitively concluded story.

No Season 2 premiere date should be assumed without a separate, current confirmation. Production schedules and release plans can change.

The verdict

Task: Season 1 is a bleak Philadelphia-area crime drama that uses an FBI manhunt to explore the less visible forces behind criminal choices: family loyalty, grief, economic pressure, fear, and the hope of redemption. Mark Ruffalo and Tom Pelphrey anchor a strong ensemble, while Brad Ingelsby’s authorship gives the series a clear connection to Pennsylvania-centered character drama without making it a continuation of Mare of Easttown.

Its plotting may occasionally feel more constructed than its character work, but the seven-episode season is a compelling fit for viewers who want crime television with emotional and moral weight rather than a purely mechanical investigation.
