Spoilers for Task season 1, episode 6, “Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing, there is a river.” The FBI, Robbie and the Dark Hearts collide in the woods, turning a long shootout into a tragedy: Robbie and Lizzie die, while Kathleen is wounded and survives. The episode’s most affecting moment comes after the gunfire, when Tom tries to help Robbie even as he understands he may not be able to save him.
How the forest shootout unfolds
The episode’s opening action brings three pursuits together. The FBI task force is hunting Robbie; Robbie is pursuing the Dark Hearts; and the gang opens fire. The Guardian describes the forest-cabin shootout as lasting 18 minutes, while The A.V. Club calls it an 18-minute opening action sequence. Both accounts emphasize the same effect: the episode’s separate storylines collapse into a single, chaotic confrontation.
The violence scatters the characters rather than delivering a clean victory to any side. As the fighting plays out, Kathleen is shot in the shoulder. She survives. Lizzie is exposed to Grasso firing close to her and loses her hearing. Unable to hear warnings later, she approaches the road and is struck by the Dark Hearts’ getaway vehicle. She dies.
Robbie’s confrontation with Jayson ends just as badly. After throwing a bag into the river, Robbie fights Jayson, who stabs him. Tom tries to get Robbie medical help, but Robbie dies. In the space of the same gun-blasted sequence, the episode makes clear who lived and who died: Kathleen survives her injury; Lizzie and Robbie do not.

Why Tom’s final encounter with Robbie matters
Tom’s attempt to help Robbie shifts the climax from action to grief. He does not mistake Robbie’s choices for innocence, but he recognizes a person in front of him who is dying. Mark Ruffalo described that empathy as part of Tom’s effectiveness as an agent: “It’s what makes Tom a really great agent: his empathy.” Tom’s compassion does not cancel the crimes or the harm surrounding Robbie; it complicates the familiar idea that an agent and a fugitive can only face each other as opponents.
Robbie’s motive is also more specific than a simple wish to escape. Tom Pelphrey said Robbie’s “North Star” is his family and caring for his children. That helps explain the emotional force of Tom staying with him: he sees Robbie’s humanity and attachment to his family, even as the story holds him accountable for what he has done.

The A.V. Club reads Robbie’s plan in the woods as a decoy that allows him to protect his family financially even as he dies. That interpretation makes the action’s apparent objective inseparable from its cost: Robbie’s plan may serve his family, but it cannot preserve his life or prevent the deaths around him.
What the deaths leave behind
Lizzie’s death has consequences beyond the immediate shock of the road collision. Creator and writer Brad Ingelsby said, “The impact Lizzie leaves on the group is a profound one,” and described her death as adding guilt and shame to Grasso’s story. That is the intended emotional aftermath, but it does not settle whether the episode gives Lizzie enough character development to make her death feel fully earned.

Here, the critical response is divided in a useful way. The Guardian and The A.V. Club praised the tension and construction of the forest sequence, with the latter emphasizing how the characters’ arcs come together in the climax. But The A.V. Club also argued that Lizzie had not become as fully three-dimensional as the reviewer wanted, and raised the “fridging” trope as a concern. The episode can be effective as a tense convergence and still leave room to question whether Lizzie’s story was developed enough to support its most devastating turn.
The immediate institutional fallout is less ambiguous: the FBI suspends the task force pending an investigation. The episode also leaves unresolved questions about Grasso’s relationship with the Dark Hearts and how information has been leaking. The shootout ends, but the investigation’s consequences—and the suspicion around the operation—remain open.

Is episode 6 the season’s best hour?
Calling the episode the season’s best is a matter of judgment, not a settled critical consensus. Its strongest case is structural: the FBI’s hunt, Robbie’s pursuit and the Dark Hearts’ violence meet in one extended sequence, and the action changes the characters’ lives rather than functioning as spectacle alone. Tom’s effort to comfort Robbie gives that sequence an emotional counterweight.
The reservation is equally specific. The episode’s action and pacing drew strong praise, but the criticism of Lizzie’s characterization challenges whether every death receives the same degree of narrative preparation. That tension is part of what makes the hour so difficult to watch: the violence is forceful, the losses are real, and one of its central tragedies may feel more powerful in consequence than it does in groundwork.
