Her appearance coincided with her first court appearance over charges stemming from a protest at the Perth Royal Show; she did not enter pleas, and the case was adjourned for legal advice, according to PerthNow’s report on 21 October 2022.
What happened outside Perth Magistrates Court?
On Thursday, 20 October 2022, Peterson attended court in Perth and exposed her breasts outside the building. PerthNow reported that she had written “Animal Liberation” in blue marker on her body and displayed a separate vulgar message directed at The West Australian.
Peterson said the message was a response to a previous article about her court appearance that described her as “docile.” PerthNow quoted her as writing: “Today I walked into court with this message response to The West newspaper who reported on my court appearance last month, describing me as ‘docile.’” That is her stated explanation for the message.
Why was Peterson appearing in court?
The appearance concerned charges arising from a protest at the Perth Royal Show. A 26 September 2022 report by The West Australian described the incident at a cattle judging ring as an allegation and noted that a court appearance was planned. PerthNow later reported that video showed Peterson and a friend appearing to lock themselves to a fence around the ring, after which Peterson was arrested and charged with trespass and disorderly behaviour in public.

Those reports describe allegations, not a finding of guilt. At the 20 October appearance, Peterson did not enter pleas. The matter was adjourned until the following month so she could obtain legal advice. The contemporaneous account establishes that status at the time; it does not establish a later court outcome.
Was this the same as Peterson’s March 2022 court protest?
No. The October event was tied to the Perth Royal Show charges. A separate topless protest took place outside court in March 2022, just after a trial concerning a December 2020 protest at the Boatshed Market. PerthNow reported that police issued move-on notices during that March event.

The different dates and proceedings matter: the March protest followed the Boatshed Market trial, while the October protest coincided with Peterson’s first appearance over the Royal Show incident. They were separate events.

In the same PerthNow report, Peterson said: “I will never stop disrupting and partaking in civil disobedience until all animals are liberated.” The statement records her position; it does not change the reported status of the charges before the court.
