Tara Lipinski and sports producer Todd Kapostasy married on June 24, 2017, at Middleton Place in Charleston, South Carolina. Their wedding unfolded across several Lowcountry settings, with events at Boone Hall Plantation and Kiawah Island before the ceremony and reception at Middleton Place.
Why Tara Lipinski chose Charleston
Lipinski told Charleston Weddings Magazine that she fell for the Lowcountry after visiting Kiawah Island during a Stars on Ice tour stop. Its marshes, oak trees and ocean views stayed with her; she later built a getaway there. “I always knew I would get married in Charleston,” she said. The city also held a place in the couple’s story: “It’s where we fell in love.”
Where each part of the wedding weekend took place
The celebration used multiple venues, each with a distinct role. The ceremony and main reception were at Middleton Place; the welcome party and rehearsal dinner took place elsewhere in the Lowcountry.
- Welcome party: A barbecue at Cotton Dock at Boone Hall Plantation.
- Rehearsal dinner: The River Course on Kiawah Island.
- Ceremony: The Parterre above the Butterfly Lakes at Middleton Place.
- Cocktail party: Middleton Place’s Octagonal Sunken Garden.
- Reception: A tent near the historic manor house at Middleton Place.
Charleston Weddings Magazine’s Fall/Winter 2017 feature documents the itinerary and identifies Mindy Weiss as the planner. Its supplier credits include Sylvie Gil Photography, Jackson Durham Events, Sperry Tents Southeast, Ooh! Events, EventHaus, Old South Vintage Rentals, Cru Catering, Ashley Bakery, Technical Event Company and Party Tables.

What the ceremony and reception looked like
A contemporary People report published June 28, 2017, and reproduced by Yahoo Sports described a large-scale celebration. It reported about 245 guests, more than 40,000 flowers overall and a 100-by-80-foot reception tent. The main floral altar alone was described as having 12,000 stems. These are figures reported in the 2017 account, not independently verified measurements.
People described Lipinski’s gown as a hand-embroidered Reem Acra design, with a 20-foot train by Laura Basci, and reported that her aisle was 200 feet long. The reception included Southern-influenced catering and a six-tier cake made by Ashley Bakery. Lipinski and Kapostasy’s first dance was to William Fitzsimmons’s “Everywhere.”

The same report identified guests including Olympic figure skater Scott Hamilton, sportscaster Dan Patrick and Johnny Weir, Lipinski’s “bridesman.” Lipinski called the day “a fairytale come to life,” while Kapostasy said, “She was so beautiful.” Hamilton described the occasion this way: “The Charleston setting was beautiful and the wedding, from start to finish, was memorable in every way.”
