Perth-raised actor Tanzyn Crawford plays Elsie, the 21-year-old at the centre of Swift Street, an eight-part SBS crime-family drama set in inner-city Melbourne. Crawford has welcomed the show’s choice to make every lead a person of colour, saying Australian screens should reflect the country’s diversity. The headline’s phrase “unapologetically diverse” captures that framing, but the available interviews do not establish it as Crawford’s own exact wording.
What is Swift Street about?
Elsie joins forces with her estranged father, Robert, an old-school hustler, to get him out of debt to the Mechanic, a crime boss. SBS’s 2024 announcement puts Robert’s fictional debt at $26,000. The family relationship and crime plot sit at the heart of the series; its cultural diversity is part of the world the characters inhabit, rather than a separate premise.
SBS describes Swift Street as an eight-part Australian drama, with episodes of approximately 30 minutes. Tig Terera created and directed the series, which was filmed on location in inner-city Melbourne. Nicholas Verso directed episodes five through eight. Alongside Crawford and Cliff Curtis as Robert, the cast includes Keiynan Lonsdale, Bernie Van Tiel, Eliza Matengu and Alfred Chuol. SBS’s series announcement
What has Crawford said about the show’s diversity?
In an SBS interview, Crawford said she appreciated that every lead in Swift Street is a person of colour. She connected that casting choice to the broader need for Australian screens to reflect the people who live in the country: “There should be a mix of what Australia looks like on our screens.” SBS interview with Tanzyn Crawford

Why does the headline call it “unapologetically diverse”?
The phrase conveys the show’s prominent, unqualified presence of people of colour in its lead ensemble, a point Crawford has discussed directly. But the SBS interview does not verify “unapologetically diverse” as a quotation from her. It is best read as the headline’s description, not as words attributed to Crawford.
That distinction matters because the show’s diversity is supported by what Crawford said about its leads and by the ABC’s description of its approach—not by a formal industry-wide statistic or a claim that the series represents every Australian experience.
