Tamil film producer B. Ashok Kumar died at his Chennai apartment in November 2017. Reports at the time said a note attributed to him alleged harassment by financier Anbuchezhiyan. Actor Vishal called for police action and urged producers facing threats to seek help; director Suseenthiran made further allegations about pressure on film figures. Those were reported claims and public appeals—not proof of the allegations or a legal finding that Kumar was murdered.
What was reported about Ashok Kumar’s death
Scroll reported on November 21, 2017, that Kumar, a producer and cousin and collaborator of actor-director Sasikumar, had died at his Chennai apartment. The report said an eight-page note attributed to Kumar alleged that Madurai financier Anbuchezhiyan had harassed him. According to the note as described by Scroll, Kumar had been repaying a loan for seven years, and the alleged pressure had intensified over the preceding six months. These details were reported allegations from the note, not independently established findings. Scroll’s November 21 report
Scroll reproduced a passage it attributed to the note: “Sasi, I couldn’t bear the torture you are being subjected to,” he said. “I am killing myself as I am not able to save you from them…I am leaving you amid cunning men, please forgive me for that.” The quotation is the report’s transcription; it does not independently authenticate the note.
What Vishal said
Vishal, then president of the Tamil Film Producers Council, urged police to act and said Kumar’s death should be treated as murder rather than suicide. That was Vishal’s appeal, not a determination by police or a court. He also invited producers who faced threats from financiers to seek help, telling Scroll: “Suicide is not a solution and I hereby request Producers to reach out to us if they face such threats from Financiers, we will be more than happy to help them out.” Scroll’s account of Vishal’s statement

What Suseenthiran alleged
On November 22, director Suseenthiran posted allegations that other people in the film industry had faced pressure. The Indian Express reported that he named actor Ajith and others. These were Suseenthiran’s claims; the report did not establish them independently. The Indian Express said Ajith had not responded at the time of publication. How the financier’s company responded
In a November 23 report, Scroll quoted Gopuram Films manager Murali questioning whether the note was genuine: “Was the letter actually written by Ashok Kumar?” Murali also said the company’s business dealings had been with Sasikumar, not Ashok Kumar. This was the company representative’s response, not an independent resolution of the note’s authenticity or the disputed business dealings. Scroll’s report on Gopuram Films’ response

What police action was reported—and what remains unclear
NDTV reported by November 22 that police had charged Anbuchezhiyan with driving Kumar to suicide and were looking for him. The report also quoted a senior police officer saying investigators then lacked information about the amount borrowed, interest charged and repayments made. A contemporaneous report of a charge and search does not establish guilt or the eventual outcome of proceedings. NDTV’s November 2017 report
The reports cited here do not establish the final disposition of the criminal case. They document the allegations attributed to the note, the public statements and responses, and police action reported at the time—not a conviction or final court finding.
