How Tamayo Perry died
Honolulu emergency-services officials said responders were called shortly before 1 p.m. on June 23, 2024, after a report of a man apparently suffering shark bites near Goat Island. Ocean Safety, fire, police and emergency medical services responded; lifeguards brought Perry to shore, where he was pronounced dead. Hawaiʻi Public Radio’s Associated Press report attributed the response details to Shayne Enright of Honolulu’s Emergency Services Department: Hawaiʻi Public Radio/AP’s account.

The incident occurred near Goat Island and Mālaekahana Beach on Oʻahu. Contemporary reports described it as an apparent shark attack. The Los Angeles Times reported on June 25, 2024, that no official cause had yet been announced and the shark species was unclear. The available reporting therefore does not establish a species or a more specific medical cause.
Who was Tamayo Perry?
Perry was a professional surfer, lifeguard and actor whose work and identity were closely connected to the ocean. He began working as a North Shore lifeguard for the City and County of Honolulu Ocean Safety in July 2016, according to the emergency-services spokesperson quoted by Hawaiʻi Public Radio/AP. He also taught surfing. In his professional biography, Perry described wanting to pass along surf etiquette and safety after surviving a near-fatal surfing accident.

Honolulu Ocean Safety acting chief Kurt Lager remembered Perry’s generosity in a statement reported by ABC News: “Tamayo’s personality was infectious and as much as people loved him, he loved everyone else more.” Mayor Rick Blangiardi called him “a legendary waterman and highly respected” and “a great member of our ocean safety team.” ABC News published the statements.

Perry’s screen credits included Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Blue Crush, Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, Lost and Hawaii Five-0. In the 2011 Pirates of the Caribbean film, he was one of six Hawaiʻi residents cast as pirates aboard the Queen Anne’s Revenge, not a lead performer. The Festival de Cannes production document identifies him among the buccaneers.
