Talk to Me uses an embalmed hand to turn a séance into a spectacle: friends invite spirits in, film the results and share the footage, until the attention-seeking game becomes dangerous. The 2023 horror film’s viral theme belongs to its fictional characters and plot—not to any claim that the film or a real ritual went viral.
What is Talk to Me about?
Directed by Danny and Michael Philippou, Talk to Me follows a group of friends who use an embalmed hand to conjure spirits. A24’s synopsis describes the thrill becoming addictive: when one participant goes too far, supernatural forces are unleashed. The film stars Sophie Wilde, Joe Bird, Alexandra Jensen, Otis Dhanji and Miranda Otto. A24’s film page lists it as a 2023 release.

The story centers on Mia, a teenager grieving her mother. As TIME’s 2023 interview with the directors explains, Mia seeks comfort with her friend Jade’s family and is drawn toward the séance after seeing videos of classmates apparently possessed.
How does the hand’s séance work?
In the film, participants light a candle, clasp the embalmed hand and say, “talk to me.” The spirit can enter, but the group’s stated rule is not to leave the door open for more than 90 seconds. That limit is an in-film rule, not an account of a real-world ritual. The premise makes the countdown feel like part of the thrill—and a boundary the characters risk crossing.

- When a group of friends discover how to conjure spirits using an embalmed hand, they become hooked on the new thrill, until one of them goes too far and unleashes terrifying supernatural forces.
Why do the characters record and post the possessions?
The possession videos turn a frightening experience into social currency. Friends watch classmates’ clips, then record and share their own sessions; for Mia and the others, the prospect of being seen helps make the séance tempting. Online attention is not separate from the danger: documenting the experience encourages the group to treat it as a performance, even as the consequences become harder to control.
That tension connects the film’s supernatural hook to a question about perception. Michael Philippou told TIME: “When you watch videos of people being possessed and see these horrible things happen, how much of it is mental perception? How much of it is you telling yourself that you’re hearing or experiencing something as opposed to reality?” The footage can look like proof to viewers while leaving room for doubt about what they are seeing—and for the characters, the uncertainty does not make the risk less real.

What inspired the directors’ approach?
Michael Philippou told TIME, “I’ve always been fascinated by possessions and the paranormal, in general.” The hand also has a personal association for Danny Philippou. Describing a moment when the touch of someone he loved helped him through a frightening episode, he told TIME: “The shaking stopped. The touch of someone I love brought me out of it.” That idea of touch as comfort takes on a darker edge in a story where contact opens a door to spirits.
The directors have described their aim as character-led rather than shock for shock’s sake. Danny Philippou told TIME: “We’ve always wanted our horror to be rooted in character and not feel like we’re being gratuitous for gratuity’s sake. We want there to be meaning behind all of it.” Mia’s grief and the group’s desire for connection give the supernatural premise an emotional center.
