It is a peaceful, single-player life simulation about making a home and building community in the Hobbit village of Bywater—not a combat-focused Lord of the Rings game.
What is Tales of the Shire?
Tales of the Shire is a cosy life sim in which you create a Hobbit and settle in Bywater. Its activities center on ordinary Shire life: decorating a home, gardening, fishing, foraging, preparing meals, trading with townsfolk, and forming relationships. Players also help Bywater become an official village. Wētā Workshop Game Studio developed the game, and the studio’s current project page names Fictions as its publisher. Wētā Workshop’s game page
The design is aimed at players who want a gentle Tolkien-world setting rather than action combat. Wētā Workshop co-founder, Co-CEO and Chief Creative Officer Richard Taylor described it as “a beautiful way that players who are looking for a quieter, more peaceful time can discover this in a less explored corner of this universe.” That is the studio’s promotional description, not an independent assessment.
Is Tales of the Shire out yet?
Yes. The game launched on July 29, 2025. Earlier dates in announcements were plans that changed, not the final release date:

Netflix Games appeared in the 2024 planned platform list, but it is not among the platforms listed on Wētā Workshop’s current page. The available information therefore does not establish Netflix Games as a current way to play.
What platforms is Tales of the Shire on?

These are the platforms listed by Wētā Workshop for the launched game. Steam identifies the PC version as single-player and categorizes it under life simulation, cozy games, farming simulation, cooking, and simulation. Those tags describe its storefront classification; they are not a review.

Can you get a physical copy for PS5 or Switch?
The official Tales of the Shire site has announced a physical edition for PS5 and Nintendo Switch. That announcement establishes a physical-edition option, but does not by itself confirm current stock at a particular retailer, regional availability, price, or what the package contains. Steam lists the PC game and an Official Soundtrack as digital content, including a soundtrack bundle. That does not establish that a physical soundtrack edition exists.

The original April 2024 unveiling targeted the second half of that year. A September 2024 announcement then set a March 25, 2025 target and named Netflix Games among the planned platforms. The game ultimately launched on July 29, 2025; the current studio platform list names PC via Steam, Switch, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. Keeping those announcements in their proper time context matters: a planned date or platform is not proof of final availability.
