Tab & Tony was reported in June 2018 as a Paramount drama inspired by Tab Hunter’s memoir and his relationship with Anthony Perkins. That announcement is not confirmation of a completed or released film: no current official update confirms production, cast, distribution, or a release date.
What is Tab & Tony about?
In June 2018, trade and news outlets reported that Paramount was developing a drama about actors Tab Hunter and Anthony Perkins. The announced project was based on Hunter’s memoir, Tab Hunter Confidential: The Making of a Movie Star, written with Eddie Muller. The report named Doug Wright as screenwriter and J.J. Abrams, Zachary Quinto, and Allan Glaser as producers. These are details from the project announcement, not evidence that the film went into production.
Is Tab & Tony based on a true story?
The announced film drew on Hunter’s autobiographical account. In his memoir, Hunter described a secret relationship with Perkins. That makes the book the stated source for the project, but it does not establish how a screenplay would have portrayed events or which details it might have changed. The relationship should be understood as Hunter recounted it, rather than as a verified account of every private detail.
What was the pressure around their public images?
Accounts of Hunter’s career describe a carefully marketed boy-next-door image. In the studio era, public presentation could shape a star’s prospects, while openness about same-sex relationships could put a career at risk. Coverage of Hunter also describes public dates with actresses as part of the image presented to audiences. That context helps explain the secrecy described in his memoir, but it does not support treating every public relationship as fabricated.

Has Tab & Tony been released?
No current official confirmation of production, casting, distribution, or release has been established. The available details trace back to the June 2018 development announcement, so there is no confirmed release date or viewing format to report. The project should be described as a film that was reported as being developed, not as a released movie.

The memoir behind the announced film
Tab Hunter Confidential: The Making of a Movie Star, written by Hunter with Eddie Muller, was published in 2005. It is the clearest way to read Hunter’s own account of his life and the relationship that informed the film announcement. Hachette lists the book and paperback edition details on its publisher page.
The 2015 documentary
Tab Hunter Confidential is a separate documentary released in 2015. The distributor lists DVD and Blu-ray formats; that listing identifies formats, not current store availability. See the distributor’s documentary page.
The documentary and memoir are existing works about Hunter, not versions of Tab & Tony. The feature project’s cast, runtime, release platform, and availability have not been confirmed.
