T.D. Jakes announced on April 27, 2025, that he would hand senior-pastor duties at The Potter’s House in Dallas to his daughter, Sarah Jakes Roberts, and son-in-law, Touré Roberts. The church says the two were welcomed as co-senior pastors on July 6, 2025. Jakes remains the church’s founding pastor, chairman of the board, and spiritual overseer.
What changed at The Potter’s House?
The leadership transition changed who holds the senior-pastor role, not Jakes’s entire relationship with the church. The Potter’s House continues to identify him as founding pastor, while Sarah and Touré Jakes Roberts serve together as co-senior pastors. In its April announcement, the church said Jakes would remain chairman of the board and spiritual overseer and continue to preach and offer wisdom as founding pastor. The Potter’s House announcement and its leadership-evolution page describe those continuing roles.
When was the handoff announced and completed?
The April 27 announcement set out a plan for the change later that year. It was not the installation itself: the church’s anniversary and installation hub records that Touré and Sarah Jakes Roberts were welcomed as co-senior pastors on July 6, 2025.
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| November 24, 2024 | Jakes experienced a health incident during a sermon at The Potter’s House. The church described it at the time as a “slight health incident,” according to the Associated Press; family members said he was recovering under medical care. AP report |
| April 27, 2025 | Jakes announced that Sarah and Touré Jakes Roberts would become senior pastors later in 2025, while he continued in other church roles. The church described the succession preparation as a process developed over several years. The Potter’s House announcement |

Did the November 2024 medical emergency cause his decision?
The incident preceded the public announcement by about five months, but that sequence alone does not establish that it caused the transition. The church’s announcement says succession planning had been underway for several years. CBS Texas later reported that Jakes connected his decision to the November event; that is a report of his stated reasoning, not independent proof that the incident alone prompted the handoff. The available contemporaneous description of the November incident is the church’s phrase “slight health incident,” as reported by AP. That account does not establish a diagnosis, so it should not be described more specifically without additional attributed evidence.
What Jakes said about the transition
In the April announcement, Jakes wrote: “For nearly 50 years, I’ve had the honor of connecting with and serving the local and global community as a pastor, global faith leader and unwavering truth teller.” This is his own description of his career in the announcement, not an independently verified statistic.
