YouTube icons are easiest to understand by asking what they do and where they appear—not by relying on their shape alone. The same control may move or disappear on desktop, mobile, TV, Shorts, livestreams, Premieres, and embedded players. When the artwork is unclear, use the icon’s tooltip, accessible label, or nearby text as the final authority.

YouTube icons at a glance

Icon or label What it does Where you usually find it Important qualification
Play / Pause Starts or stops playback. Lower-left area of the desktop player or overlaid on mobile video. The control can be hidden until you tap or move the pointer.
Progress bar Shows where you are in the video and lets you jump to another point. Along the bottom of the player. It may show a previous stopping point for signed-in viewers.
Speaker Adjusts volume or mutes the video. Player controls. Device volume and browser permissions can also affect sound.
CC Turns available closed captions or subtitles on or off. Player controls or the Settings menu. Captions are not available for every video or language.
Gear Opens playback settings such as speed, quality, captions, and other available options. Player controls. The list of settings varies by device, video, account, and availability.
Full screen Expands the video to fill the screen. Lower-right area of the player. Browser, device, and embedded-player restrictions may apply.
Miniplayer Keeps a video playing in a small floating player inside YouTube while you browse. Player controls or the video’s More menu. It is not the same as operating-system picture-in-picture.
Thumbs up / Like Records a Like and, for signed-in viewers, adds the video to the private Liked videos playlist. Below a standard video or livestream. Shorts may use a heart-shaped Like control instead.
Thumbs down / Dislike Records a dislike on supported long-form videos and livestreams. Below the video. Dislike is feedback, not a report of a policy violation.
Share Offers ways to copy or send a video, channel, or timestamped link. Below the video, in menus, and on channel pages. Available sharing actions differ by device and context.
Save Adds a video to Watch later or a playlist. Below videos and in video menus. The button may say Save or use playlist-related wording.
Subscribe Follows a channel and adds its uploads to your Subscriptions feed. On a channel page and beneath videos. Subscribing alone does not guarantee an alert for every upload.
Bell Controls channel notifications. Near the Subscribe button or in subscription controls. It controls alerts, not the subscription itself.
Check mark Shows that YouTube has verified a channel’s identity. Beside an official channel name. It is not an endorsement, award, or proof that every video is accurate.
Live Identifies a real-time broadcast. Video cards, watch pages, search results, and the player. A Premiere is scheduled content that begins with a live-chat experience; it is not necessarily an ordinary live camera broadcast.
Super Chat / Super Sticker Paid live-chat interactions that highlight a message or display an animated sticker. Live chat and some Premiere chats. Eligibility and availability vary by location and creator settings.
Super Thanks A one-time paid thank-you attached to an eligible video or Short. Near the comments area of eligible videos and Shorts. It is separate from live-chat Super Chat and Super Stickers.

Video-player symbols and controls

Play, pause, and the progress bar

The triangular Play icon starts a video. Once playback begins, it normally changes to a Pause symbol. On phones and tablets, these controls are commonly placed over the video and disappear after a moment; on desktop, they usually sit along the lower edge of the player.

The horizontal progress bar shows the current position. Click or drag it to move through the video. A signed-in viewer may also see an indicator showing approximately where they previously stopped watching. Chapter markers, when available, divide the bar into named sections. You can select a chapter control or marker to move between those sections. YouTube documents player controls and seeking in its player-controls help.

Back, forward, and chapter controls

Left- and right-seek controls move backward or forward. Their exact interval depends on the control or shortcut: the documented desktop keyboard behavior includes five-second movement with the left and right arrow keys when the seek bar has focus, and ten-second movement with J and L.

Chapter arrows or chapter labels appear only when a video has chapters. They are navigation controls, not indications that the video is live or officially produced by YouTube.

Speaker, mute, and volume

The speaker icon opens or controls the player’s volume. Selecting it may mute the video; selecting it again restores sound or reveals a volume slider. If a video remains silent, check the device’s volume, browser tab mute state, Bluetooth connection, and operating-system output before assuming that the YouTube control is broken.

Settings, quality, and playback speed

The gear opens a menu of options available for that video and device. Depending on the context, it may include video quality, playback speed, captions, audio-language choices, dubbing, and other playback controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Playback speed changes how quickly the video runs. It is useful for slowing down a difficult explanation or reviewing documentary footage, and for moving more quickly through familiar material. Speed choices and their availability can vary across devices and YouTube surfaces; the gear menu is more reliable than assuming a fixed list of options.

CC: closed captions and subtitles

CC means closed captions. Select it to turn available captions on or off. Caption settings can allow viewers to change the font, color, opacity, size, background, caption window, and character-edge style. YouTube’s caption guidance distinguishes caption availability from automatic caption generation: automatic captions are not guaranteed for every video, language, or device.

If CC is missing, the video may not have captions, the selected language may be unavailable, or the current app, TV, embedded player, or account may expose the option elsewhere. Audio-language and dubbing controls are also availability-dependent and should not be treated as universal icons.

Full screen and miniplayer

The full-screen corners icon expands the player. Pressing Esc generally exits full screen on a computer, while mobile and TV devices use their own back or exit controls.

The miniplayer icon reduces the video to a small floating player within the YouTube experience so you can continue browsing. It does not mean that the video has been downloaded or that it will continue after YouTube is closed. Embedded players and some mobile, TV, Shorts, or account contexts may not offer it.

Like, dislike, comment, share, and save symbols

Like and dislike

The thumbs-up button is YouTube’s Like control. For a signed-in viewer, liking a video places it in the private Liked videos playlist. The thumbs-down button records a dislike on supported long-form videos and livestreams.

A dislike is not the same as reporting harmful or illegal content. If a video appears to violate YouTube rules, use the report function rather than treating a dislike as a policy complaint. YouTube explains the distinction in its Like and dislike guidance.

Why a heart can mean different things

A heart is context-sensitive:

  • When it appears beneath someone’s comment, it may be a creator heart, meaning the channel owner has shown appreciation for that comment.
  • In Shorts, a heart-shaped control may function as the Like button rather than as a creator response.

Look at the object beside the heart—video, Short, comment, or live-chat message—before assigning it a meaning.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Comment bubble

The speech bubble opens or focuses the comments area. Comments may be sorted, limited, held for review, turned off, or restricted by the creator. A comment icon therefore opens a conversation area; it does not promise that every viewer can post or see every comment.

Share

The Share icon opens sharing actions. Depending on the device and page, you may be able to copy a link, send it to another app, share a channel, display a channel QR code, or create a link that starts at a selected timestamp. A timestamped link is particularly useful when sending someone directly to a specific interview, quotation, or explanation in a long documentary. See YouTube’s sharing instructions for the current options.

Save and playlist icons

Save adds the video to a playlist chosen by the viewer, such as Watch later or a custom playlist. On some surfaces, YouTube uses playlist wording or places the action inside a three-dot menu. Saving is not downloading: it organizes a link in your YouTube account and does not create an offline copy unless YouTube separately offers an official download feature for that viewer and content.

Subscribe and notification-bell symbols

Subscribe follows a channel. New uploads then appear in the viewer’s Subscriptions feed. It does not automatically mean that every upload produces an alert. YouTube says the default notification setting provides personalized highlights; choosing the bell’s All setting requests all available notifications.

The bell controls notifications, not the subscription. A ringing-bell state generally indicates that the viewer selected all notifications. An inactive or crossed-out bell commonly signals that notifications are disabled or unavailable in the current context, but labels and visual states can differ between apps. YouTube also notes that notification settings can reset if a viewer unsubscribes and later resubscribes. Channels marked made for kids have notification restrictions. The official subscription and notification help has the relevant account and channel qualifications.

Verification checks and membership badges

Verification check

A check mark beside a channel name means YouTube has verified that the channel is the official channel of the creator, artist, company, or public figure it represents. It is an identity signal—not an endorsement, award, accuracy guarantee, popularity medal, or promise of extra features. A verified channel can still publish an opinion, make an error, or host content that requires independent evaluation. Read YouTube’s verification-badge explanation for the current criteria and presentation.

Membership badge

A membership badge identifies a viewer who pays for a channel membership. It can appear beside that member’s name in comments and live chat. It is not the check mark and does not authenticate the channel or the member’s claims.

Depending on the channel’s offering, members may receive custom emoji, members-only posts, videos, Shorts, livestreams, or milestone chats. A members-only label therefore signals an access restriction or member benefit, not official verification. Details are set by the channel and may vary; YouTube describes the feature in its channel-membership help.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Live, Premiere, chat, and paid-support symbols

Live and Premiere

A red or otherwise prominent Live label identifies a real-time broadcast. A Premiere is scheduled video content that can provide a shared viewing event and live chat around its start. Both contexts may display chat-related controls, but the labels should not be treated as interchangeable.

Live Chat appears on YouTube watch pages for livestreams and Premieres. It may be limited to subscribers or members according to the creator’s settings. YouTube’s documentation says live chat is not available in embedded players, which explains why a chat icon may appear on the YouTube watch page but not inside a video embedded on another website. See the official live-stream and chat documentation.

Super Chat and Super Stickers

Super Chat and Super Stickers are paid live-chat interactions:

  • A Super Chat is a highlighted, often brightly colored message that may remain prominent or be pinned in the chat.
  • A Super Sticker is an animated image that appears in live chat.

They are fan-funding features, not ordinary comments, verification marks, or channel memberships. Availability depends on the creator’s eligibility, the viewer’s location, payment conditions, and the stream’s settings. YouTube’s Super Chat and Super Stickers help lists the current limitations.

Super Thanks

Super Thanks is separate from live-chat Supers. It is a one-time support purchase available on eligible long-form videos and Shorts. The purchaser receives an on-screen animation and can publish a distinct colorful, customizable comment in the video’s comments area. It is not an ordinary Like, membership badge, Super Chat, or Super Sticker. Availability is determined by eligibility and location; consult YouTube’s Super Thanks documentation.

Donation and fundraising symbols

Donation icons identify fundraising features and follow rules separate from Supers. YouTube notes that Super Thanks is not available on videos with donations, and Super Chat and Super Stickers are not available on livestreams with live-chat donations. Consequently, a familiar support icon may be absent even when a creator is raising money. YouTube’s Giving documentation explains these interactions.

Navigation icons

Symbol Typical destination or action
Home Personalized recommendations and the main YouTube feed.
Subscriptions Recent uploads from channels you follow.
Library or You History, playlists, Watch later, and other saved or account-related content. The label varies by app version and device.
Magnifying glass Search.
Profile picture Account, settings, purchases, and account-switching areas.
Three dots A context-sensitive More menu. The available actions depend on whether you opened it for a video, comment, channel, playlist, or chat message.

These symbols are familiar navigation conventions, but they do not guarantee a fixed menu. YouTube may move features between visible buttons and the three-dot menu as its apps and experiments change.

Why a YouTube icon may be missing

A missing symbol usually reflects context rather than a broken interface. Check these possibilities before troubleshooting the device:

  • You are watching a Short, which uses a different control layout and may replace the thumbs-up with a heart.
  • The video is a livestream or Premiere, where chat, paid support, and timing controls differ from a standard upload.
  • You are using an embedded player; for example, live chat is not available inside embedded players.
  • You are watching on a TV app, where controls are designed for a remote rather than a pointer or touchscreen.
  • The video or channel is made for kids, has comments disabled, or has other feature restrictions.
  • The creator has not enabled a feature, or the video is not eligible for captions, chapters, memberships, Supers, donations, or other tools.
  • The feature is unavailable in your geography, account, language, or payment region.
  • Your device, app version, browser, or a staged YouTube interface change presents a different layout.

First reveal the player controls by tapping the video or moving the pointer. Then open the gear and three-dot menus, check that the YouTube app or browser is current, and compare the same video on the YouTube watch page rather than an embedded copy. If playback is slow across several sites—not merely because one unfamiliar icon is present—the problem may involve browser extensions, storage, network conditions, background processes, or broader Windows performance. A Windows repair or cleanup product such as Outbyte PC Repair belongs only in that broader troubleshooting category; it does not identify, restore, or explain YouTube icons and should complement rather than replace security software.

How to identify an unfamiliar YouTube symbol safely

  1. Identify the surface: standard video, Short, livestream, Premiere, channel page, comment, live chat, TV app, or embedded player.
  2. Read the label: hover over the icon on desktop, tap and hold where supported, or use the accessible label supplied by the app or screen reader.
  3. Check the neighboring object: a heart under a comment is not necessarily the Like button, and a badge beside a viewer is not the channel verification check.
  4. Open the relevant menu: the gear is for playback; the three-dot menu is for context-sensitive actions; the bell is for notifications.
  5. Do not infer endorsement or safety: verification, Likes, membership badges, and paid messages each communicate something specific, but none independently proves that a video is accurate or trustworthy.

YouTube changes labels, layouts, feature eligibility, and the distinction between its standard videos, Shorts, livestreams, and Premieres. Recheck the live interface and the linked official help pages before publishing a printed guide or updating a viewer-support workflow.

Want a broader reference?

A general YouTube user guide can be useful for beginners who want a printable introduction to channels and the wider service. Treat older editions as general orientation rather than an authoritative map of today’s YouTube icons: the interface and feature availability change frequently.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the check mark beside a YouTube channel mean?

A check mark beside a YouTube channel means YouTube has verified the channel’s identity. It does not endorse the channel, guarantee that its videos are accurate, or prove that the channel has special editorial status.

Does subscribing to a YouTube channel turn on all notifications?

No. Subscribing follows the channel and places uploads in your Subscriptions feed. The notification bell controls alerts separately. Choose the bell’s All setting when that option is available and appropriate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the difference between Super Chat, Super Stickers, and Super Thanks?

Super Chat and Super Stickers are paid interactions in live chat or some Premiere chats. Super Thanks is a separate one-time support feature associated with comments on eligible long-form videos and Shorts.

Why does a heart icon have different meanings on YouTube?

A heart beneath a comment may be a creator heart showing appreciation. In Shorts, a heart-shaped control may instead be the Like button. The surrounding object and accessible label determine the meaning.

Why are some YouTube icons missing?

The video may be a Short, livestream, Premiere, embedded player, or made-for-kids video; the creator or viewer’s location may not be eligible; or the device and app may use a different layout. Reveal the controls and check the gear and More menus first.

The Bottom Line

YouTube symbols are context-dependent controls, not a permanent universal picture dictionary. Use the tooltip, accessible label, or surrounding text first; then account for the device, video type, creator settings, geography, and feature eligibility. The most important distinctions are Like versus report, Subscribe versus notifications, verification versus membership, and live-chat Supers versus Super Thanks.
