Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →For a YouTube-only prerecorded loop, OBS on a spare PC can play a local video repeatedly and send it straight to YouTube; Switchboard Live is useful when you want to route that encoder feed to multiple destinations or use its workflow controls. Switchboard does not store prerecorded videos, so either route still needs an encoder—such as OBS—to play the file. If you want the loop to continue without keeping a computer running, a cloud option such as StreamNeo is a different approach.
Which option fits your YouTube loop?
| Decision | OBS on a spare PC, direct to YouTube | OBS plus Switchboard Live |
|---|---|---|
| Destinations | Sends the encoder feed directly to YouTube. | Routes one encoder feed to the destinations you add in Switchboard. |
| Loop playback | OBS plays the local file and can repeat it. | OBS still plays the local file; Switchboard says it does not store prerecorded videos. |
| Setup | Configure OBS, YouTube’s stream destination and key, and a looping media source. | Configure OBS with Switchboard’s URL and key, verify the incoming feed, then start destinations. |
| Operating responsibility | The PC runs playback and encoding. Test and monitor the feed. | The PC still runs playback and encoding; Switchboard provides destination and workflow controls. |
| Published cost information | No Switchboard license is needed for a direct encoder path. Other costs depend on your setup. | Switchboard lists monthly or annual seat-based licenses and places 24/7 Streams under Enterprise, but its pricing page does not publish prices. Ask Switchboard to confirm current plan terms. |
| Stream archive | YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. | The same YouTube caveat applies. Switchboard lists 30+ day archives for Enterprise; confirm applicability and terms with Switchboard. |
For one YouTube destination, the direct route avoids adding a routing service between OBS and YouTube. Switchboard becomes more relevant when you need multiple destinations or its workflow features. That distinction follows from YouTube’s direct encoder setup and Switchboard’s documented routing workflow; it does not imply that Switchboard replaces OBS for local prerecorded playback.
How to loop a video in OBS and send it directly to YouTube
- Check channel eligibility. YouTube’s getting-started guidance requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. Recheck the channel before setup, since eligibility can change. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.
- Add the video in OBS. Create a Media Source, select the local video file, and enable Loop. For a playlist of multiple clips, OBS offers a VLC Video source with a loop-playlist option; the VLC libraries must be installed for that source to appear. See the OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS, set the stream service and enter the YouTube server URL and stream key from YouTube’s live-stream setup. Treat the stream key like a password: anyone with it may be able to send a feed to your channel. Use RTMPS where available. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe frequency.
- Choose output settings for your source and connection. YouTube’s H.264 guidance recommends 5 Mbps for 1080p30 and gives 6 Mbps as the minimum and 17 Mbps as the recommendation for 1080p60. These are platform recommendations, not a performance guarantee for a particular PC or internet connection. Match the bitrate to the chosen resolution, frame rate, codec, and reliable upload capacity; YouTube recommends testing the actual feed.
- Test, then monitor. Test with representative movement and audio before relying on a long-running loop. Watch YouTube’s stream health and messages, and check that the OBS source continues playing as expected.
- Plan separately for a replay. Keep a local recording backup if you need an archive. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. A continuous loop is therefore not a reliable substitute for a planned, shorter archive session. See YouTube’s archive guidance.
How to route the OBS loop through Switchboard Live
- Create a Switchboard workflow. Create a workflow and Stream Group, connect YouTube and any other intended destinations, then copy the workflow’s stream URL and key. Switchboard’s setup guide describes the routing workflow.
- Point OBS at Switchboard. In OBS, choose the Custom stream service and paste in the Switchboard URL and key. This sends the encoder feed to Switchboard rather than directly to YouTube. See Switchboard’s OBS setup article.
- Set up the same local loop. Add the video as an OBS Media Source and enable Loop, or use a VLC Video source for a playlist. Switchboard’s FAQ says prerecorded video must be played by an encoder because Switchboard does not store those files. See Switchboard’s FAQ.
- Confirm the feed before starting destinations. Use Switchboard’s confidence monitor to confirm the encoder feed is arriving, then start YouTube and any other selected destinations.
- Verify continuous-stream terms first. Switchboard’s pricing page lists 24/7 Streams under Enterprise but does not display a price. Confirm that the specific account and plan support your intended duration, destination count, and archive needs before relying on it. See Switchboard pricing.
Settings and operating details that affect reliability
Bitrate, codec, and frame rate
There is no single bitrate that suits every loop. YouTube’s published recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate. For H.264, its current guidance lists 5 Mbps recommended at 1080p30 and 6 Mbps minimum, 17 Mbps recommended at 1080p60. Allow for upload capacity beyond the stream’s target bitrate and test under the network conditions you expect to use. A spare PC’s suitability depends on its hardware, encoder settings, source format, and network—not merely on the fact that it can open OBS.
Keyframes and rate control
YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe frequency. Switchboard’s setup guide also recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe rate, and 30 or 60 fps; its OBS examples are generic and may need adjustment for upload speed and destination requirements. Use YouTube’s current settings for the direct route, and check the requirements of each destination when routing through Switchboard.

Copyright, reused material, and live eligibility
A repeat loop does not grant permission to rebroadcast a documentary, its soundtrack, or any other material. YouTube’s live-stream terms require the creator to have the necessary rights for live and archived content, including music, and to comply with Community Guidelines and applicable requirements. Verify the rights for every video and audio track before streaming; a claim of permission should cover both live transmission and any archive you intend to keep. See YouTube’s Terms of Service.
Also confirm that the channel remains eligible to go live. YouTube’s setup guidance specifies verification and no live-streaming restriction in the prior 90 days as prerequisites; a copyright or policy issue may affect access or the stream itself.

Common problems and fixes
- YouTube receives no feed: Check that OBS is streaming, the selected service and server are correct, and the stream key matches the active YouTube setup. If using Switchboard, OBS should be pointed to Switchboard’s URL and key, and its confidence monitor should show an incoming feed before you start destinations.
- The picture stutters or YouTube reports poor stream health: Test upload bitrate and reduce the output bitrate or resolution if the connection cannot sustain the selected settings. Confirm CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, then test again with representative content.
- The video stops instead of repeating: Reopen the OBS Media Source properties and confirm Loop is enabled. For a VLC playlist, verify that VLC libraries are installed and the playlist loop option is selected.
- The source is missing or the playlist will not load: Confirm the video file path is available to the PC running OBS. If the VLC Video source is absent, install the VLC libraries required by OBS and restart OBS.
- The stream ends or the archive is incomplete: Check the encoder and connection for interruptions, and do not assume one stream longer than 12 hours will be archived. For a replay, plan shorter sessions and keep a local recording backup.
- The stream is blocked, claimed, or restricted: Review YouTube’s notice and verify rights for the video and audio, as well as channel live-stream eligibility. Looping content does not avoid copyright or platform rules.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a YouTube loop that keeps going without leaving a spare PC running, StreamNeo takes a different route: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it is YouTube-only and does not stream from a camera.
