For an encoder-based YouTube Live stream, set Stream latency to Normal latency in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. It is YouTube’s option for non-interactive streams, and it gives viewers the least buffering. A made-for-kids stream has live chat and several related features disabled, so lower latency usually offers little practical benefit for responding to viewers.
Set stream latency in YouTube Studio
- In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go live and enter the stream details.
- In the Live Control Room, open Stream or Manage, then select Stream settings.
- Under Stream latency, choose Normal latency for prerecorded programming without real-time interaction. If interaction is part of the format, choose a lower-latency option only if its tradeoffs suit the stream.
This selector is for encoder-based streams. YouTube says webcam and mobile streams are configured for interactivity and do not let creators set stream latency. Studio labels and availability may change.
Which latency setting should you choose?

YouTube’s latency figures are typical expectations for most viewers, not guarantees. Lower latency leaves less read-ahead buffer in the player, making buffering or problems between encoder and player more likely; network congestion can add delay.
What changes when the channel is made for kids?
When a stream or channel is designated made for kids, YouTube disables live chat, live chat replay, Super Chat, comments on archives and upcoming streams, and reminder notifications. Personalized ads are also disabled, although contextual ads may be shown. Since chat is unavailable, choosing ultra-low latency just to answer chat messages is not useful for that stream.

Check resolution, ingest protocol, and stream health
- 4K/2160p: YouTube’s encoder guidance makes low latency unavailable for 4K and optimizes those streams for quality with normal latency.
- HLS ingest: YouTube turns off ultra-low latency when HLS is selected. HLS has higher latency because it sends video in segments.
- Test before going live: YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the actual stream, then monitoring stream health during the event.
- Eligibility: YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days to live stream.
Troubleshoot a missing setting or unexpected delay
- No Stream latency selector: Confirm that the broadcast is an encoder-based stream in Live Control Room; webcam and mobile streams do not expose the selector.
- Low latency is unavailable: Check whether the stream is set to 4K/2160p. YouTube’s guidance limits 4K to normal latency.
- Ultra-low latency is unavailable: Check the ingest protocol. HLS disables ultra-low latency.
- Viewers report buffering after lowering latency: The shorter player buffer can make playback more sensitive to problems between the encoder and player. Test the stream and monitor health; consider normal latency if rapid interaction is not essential.
- Actual delay differs between viewers: YouTube’s latency figures are typical rather than guaranteed, and network congestion or playback conditions can affect the experience.
