Spoilers for the series finale. Sweet Tooth concluded with its third season, an eight-episode final chapter that premiered on Netflix on June 6, 2024. Gus and his companions travel to Alaska to find his mother, Birdie, and uncover the origins of the Sick. The finale answers that central mystery and reveals who has been telling the story.
How Sweet Tooth Season 3 brings the series to a close
Netflix billed Season 3 as the show’s third and final season. Its eight episodes follow Gus and his companions north to Alaska, where the search for Birdie becomes a search for answers to the question at the heart of the series: which came first, the hybrids or the Sick? The season premiered June 6, 2024, according to Netflix’s season guide.
The finale resolves the origin mystery rather than leaving it as an open-ended tease. In Netflix Tudum’s ending explanation, the tree inside the cave is the source of both the Sick and the hybrids. Thacker strikes it, releasing the Sick and bringing the hybrid species into being.
What the final scene means
The finale also reveals that the voice narrating the story is an older Gus, recounting events to his grandchildren, with Wendy beside him. Netflix describes Gus’s account as an origin story for a new generation of hybrids. The ending therefore closes the story of how the Sick and hybrids began while showing that Gus’s telling of it has become part of what the next generation inherits.

Why the “one of Netflix’s best” claim is an opinion
There is no formal all-time Netflix ranking establishing Sweet Tooth as one of the service’s best shows. The phrase works as a critical judgment, not a measurable fact. Rotten Tomatoes’ displayed season scores when accessed in 2026 were 97% for Season 1, 86% for Season 2, and 93% for Season 3. Those are the site’s season scores, can change, and are not an all-time ranking.
The praise for the final season is substantial, though not unanimous. Rotten Tomatoes’ Season 3 critics consensus says, “Closing out before it grows too long in the tooth, this richly imagined family series remains engrossing to the very end.” Decider critic Joel Keller was more emphatic: “There’s something so endearing about Sweet Tooth that by the end of the final season, it has earned a place in Netflix’s Pantheon of great shows.” That is Keller’s assessment, reproduced by Rotten Tomatoes, rather than an official Netflix accolade. The roundup also reflects mixed reactions, including criticism that the action and drama can distract from the show’s tone.

How the series uses Jeff Lemire’s comic
Sweet Tooth is based on Jeff Lemire’s DC comic book series. The adaptation’s older-Gus narration is a notable structural choice: showrunner Jim Mickle told Netflix Tudum that the comic does not narrate throughout and introduces old-man Gus only in its final issue. The show expands that framing across its seasons, then makes its purpose clear in the finale.
For readers comparing the versions, narrative framing is a useful starting point, followed by how each handles plot, characters, and the origin mystery. The sources establish the difference in narration and the show’s ending, but do not support a comprehensive scene-by-scene comparison.
