Medical staff later determined it was a dry bite, with no venom released. But during transport, production briefly lost radio communication with the boat carrying him, leaving people at base camp unsure whether he was conscious and breathing. That uncertainty explains the urgency behind the dockside question, “Is he breathing?”
What happened to Jake Latimer?
Latimer told Entertainment Weekly that he felt tingling and saw a snake latched onto the bottom of his foot. The recap identified the snake as a banded sea krait. The bite prompted the show’s medical team to remove him from the game for care and recovery.

Latimer later said he was taken to a hospital in Brisbane. He returned home shortly before his son’s birth, according to his interview. The available accounts do not establish when the incident was filmed.
Was the bite venomous?
The snake was venomous, but the bite was reported as dry: medical staff concluded that no venom had been released. Latimer confirmed that a doctor told him it was dry. The episode accounts and interviews report what the contestant and show said; they are not independent medical records.
#1 Best Overall
Despite that outcome, Latimer described the experience as terrifying. “That has been the most scared I’ve ever been in my entire life. When you think that you’re dying, it’s a feeling that I’m never going to forget,” he told Entertainment Weekly.

Jeff Probst said production and medical staff briefly lost radio communication with the boat transporting Latimer. During that gap, people at base camp did not know whether Latimer was conscious and breathing properly. In remarks from his podcast quoted by Surviving Tribal, Probst explained that when the teams returned to the dock, Jimmy Quigley’s shouted question reflected genuine uncertainty: “That wasn’t Jimmy overreacting. We didn’t know. So that was the first question.”
Rank #2
So the dockside moment was not simply a dramatic reaction to a bite later found to be dry. The reported medical assessment came after the frightening period in which the people at base camp had lost contact and did not know Latimer’s condition.
