Sam Phalen expected close ally Sierra Wright to vote for him at the Survivor 47 finale. She voted for winner Rachel LaMont instead, and Phalen later said the choice “stung.” He also thought the overall result might be much closer than the 7-1-0 tally.
Why Sierra Wright’s vote hurt
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly’s Dalton Ross, published December 19, 2024, Phalen said he expected Wright’s support because he considered them close allies. He described his game as one he had played “for both her and I” and recalled that Wright had been voted out at a tribal council where the votes were split between them.
Asked whether it hurt not to get her vote, Phalen replied, “Yeah, no, totally. It stung.” He also put the disappointment in perspective: “That stung a little bit, but I think we’ve seen through 46 and whatnot too that you can never guarantee it, and people vote for different reasons — random reasons that you might not expect.”
That is Phalen’s account of his expectation and reaction; it does not establish Wright’s private reason for voting for LaMont. Phalen said he and Wright were friendly after the game, so the vote should not be read as evidence that their relationship ended.

Phalen expected a closer jury result
Phalen said he entered Final Tribal Council feeling behind LaMont, but believed he could win a couple of votes by making the case he had planned. He expected votes from Kyle Ostwald, Wright, and Gabe Ortis, and later thought Andy Rueda might also be a possibility.
As the ballots were read, Phalen said he began thinking the count might be four-to-four. He knew he did not have Sue Smey’s vote, but was still surprised by how decisively LaMont won.

| Finalist | Votes |
|---|---|
| Rachel LaMont | 7 |
| Sam Phalen | 1 |
| Sue Smey | 0 |
Kyle Ostwald cast Phalen’s sole vote. The reported tally makes two separate reactions clear: Phalen was disappointed that a close ally chose LaMont, and he was surprised that LaMont’s margin was so large. He described LaMont as a formidable opponent and said he wanted her to be celebrated, even as he managed his own disappointment in the immediate after-show.
