The September 18, 2024, Entertainment Weekly feature carried by Yahoo presented the Survivor 47 cast’s own cases for why they could win, before the season began. The season is now over: Rachel LaMont won. The preseason answers are not available in the accessible source material here, so specific claims cannot be reliably attributed to individual contestants.
What the preseason feature was—and what can be confirmed
The feature was a snapshot of contestants’ expectations before they played, not a forecast of the eventual winner. Its exact-title listing identifies it as an Entertainment Weekly feature carried by Yahoo on September 18, 2024. The page could not be retrieved, and its individual answers are not exposed in the available result summary. That means the cast’s precise preseason explanations—and whether any particular player predicted a winning strategy that came to pass—cannot be confirmed here.
For the original feature, see Yahoo Entertainment’s September 18, 2024, listing. Without the article text, it would be misleading to invent or infer quotes for the contestants.
Who won Survivor 47?
Rachel LaMont won the completed season. TVLine reported the finale jury vote as 7-1-0: seven votes for Rachel, one for Sam Phalen, and none for Sue Smey. That outcome gives the preseason feature a retrospective interest, but it does not establish what Rachel—or any other castaway—said before the game.

How Rachel later explained her winning path
In a post-finale interview with Parade on December 19, 2024, Rachel described eavesdropping as information that shaped her idol play. She also credited her immunity wins with helping her stay in the game, including a pivotal win at Final Five. Those are Rachel’s reflections on her own season, not an independent assessment of every factor behind her victory.
Rachel gave a more specific account of the idol decision to TV Insider on December 19, 2024: “The biggest move has to be the way that I played the idol, but that also ties directly into the eavesdropping.” The interview says she won four individual immunity challenges, tying the record for female individual-immunity wins. Parade described her game as lasting 26 days. These figures belong to those outlets’ 2024 coverage.

How other finalists and players described their strategies
Andy Rueda: building options from an underestimated position
After his episode 13 exit, Andy told TVLine on December 12, 2024, that he believed others underestimated his threat level early in the game and that he used that position to develop options. He later saw the underdog five alliance as offering little agency, short-term safety, or chance to win, and chose to take a shot through Operation Italy. As he put it: “I am in a very unique position to make something else happen and I either have to go with this underdog five or I have to take a shot.” This is Andy’s postgame interpretation, not a verified summary of his preseason answer.
Sam Phalen: planning and managing information
In his December 19, 2024, TVLine finale interview, Sam said he and Genevieve had discussed a split-vote plan involving a fake idol before the reward that enabled Operation Italy. He also described trying to lower his threat level by placing other players above himself and managing what information others had. Sam’s account offers another postgame view of strategy; it does not verify what he told the preseason feature.

What can—and cannot—be said about the cast’s predictions
- Confirmed: the feature presented the cast’s own reasons for believing they could win before the season began.
- Confirmed: Rachel LaMont ultimately won, and postgame interviews describe how she viewed information gathering, her idol play, and immunity wins.
- Not confirmed: the individual preseason explanations, exact quotations, or a contestant-by-contestant comparison between those claims and what happened in the game.
- Not established: whether the contestants’ preseason confidence accurately predicted their results. The finale outcome alone cannot answer that question.
