In remarks reported on August 22, 2024, actor and BJP MP Suresh Gopi said he would consider himself “saved” if relieved of ministerial duties so he could return to films. He did not announce a resignation: the comment described a wish to make room for acting while serving as a Union minister.
What Suresh Gopi said
At an event organised in his honour by the Kerala Film Chamber of Commerce, Gopi described cinema as his passion. Scroll.in, attributing its account primarily to PTI, quoted him as saying: “But without my passion [cinema], I will die.” He said he had accepted a ministerial appointment after BJP leaders told him it was for the people of Thrissur who had elected him.
In that context, Gopi said he would feel “saved” if removed from ministerial duties and able to act. The remark was conditional; it was not an announcement that he had resigned or been removed. Scroll.in also noted that Gopi had previously said he did not want a Cabinet berth and later said he would not resign from the Union Council of Ministers.
His reported plans to resume acting
Gopi said he had asked Home Minister Amit Shah for permission to return to films. According to Scroll.in’s August 22, 2024 report, Shah asked how many films he intended to act in, and Gopi answered “around 22.”

The report said Gopi planned to join the shooting of Ottakomban on September 6, 2024, and expected three or four ministry officials to accompany him so he could continue discharging his duties, with arrangements made on set. Those were plans he described in 2024, not confirmation that permission was granted or that filming took place. Scroll.in’s report does not establish what happened afterward or verify his present ministerial status.
The political context in Thrissur
At the time of the remarks, Gopi was a BJP Lok Sabha MP for Thrissur and a Union Minister of State for Tourism, Petroleum and Natural Gas. Scroll.in reported that he defeated CPI candidate V. S. Sunilkumar by 74,686 votes in the 2024 election; the outlet described his win as the BJP’s first Lok Sabha seat in Kerala.
