That makes the finale’s claim to greatness an argument about the whole life of a hero—not a consensus ranking, but a case built on unusually complete closure.
What happens in the series finale
Spoilers for the series finale. “It Went by So Fast” is season 4, episode 10, the series’ final episode. The CW lists its original airdate as December 2, 2024, with Gregory Smith directing and Brent Fletcher and Todd Helbing writing. The official synopsis sets up the immediate conflict: “THE EPIC SERIES FINALE – The Kents fight with everything they have as Luthor (Michael Cudlitz) makes his final move on Smallville.” The CW’s episode listing
The Kents and their allies confront Lex Luthor and Doomsday in an action-heavy opening. But the story does not treat the villains’ defeat as the whole ending. It moves to Lana Lang and John Henry Irons’s wedding, then follows Clark and Lois through the rest of their lives in a voiceover-led epilogue. After his battle with Doomsday, Clark has a human heart; his powers gradually fade, and he ages. Lois’s cancer returns and she dies. Clark dies later, surrounded by family, and the two reunite in the afterlife. Their sons, Jonathan and Jordan, become protectors and build families of their own. TheWrap’s finale report and TV Insider’s interview with the showrunners recount the final episode and its coda.
Why the epilogue makes the ending feel complete
The plot ends, but so does a life
Many superhero finales can close their central conflict and leave the hero’s future open. This one resolves the immediate danger, then asks a more intimate question: what happens to Superman after the battles are over? The extended coda gives the answer in years rather than in one last image of victory. Clark and Lois get a life together, with its ordinary passage of time, family milestones, illness, grief, and eventual death.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That change in scale is the finale’s defining choice. The action delivers the familiar payoff of a last stand; the epilogue makes the outcome matter by showing what the fight was protecting. It is not simply that Clark saves people. He gets to live among them, grow old, and remain part of a family whose story continues after his.
Mortality turns the icon into a person
The ending draws on the “Death of Superman” story, but its emphasis is different: rather than stopping at apparent death and return, it follows Clark into aging and a final death. The creators described the opportunity to tell a complete Superman story as a reason to take that approach. Brent Fletcher said, “To go through that with him, we felt, was a really fascinating way to end that icon’s story.” TV Insider’s interview

Clark’s mortality does not erase what makes him Superman. Instead, it gives the character a different kind of limit—one that strength cannot overcome—and makes his devotion to Lois and their family central to the finale’s meaning. The choice is affecting precisely because it does not grant him an exceptional escape from the human experiences the show has spent years placing alongside the superhero drama.
Grief, reunion, and a legacy that continues
A bittersweet ending, not a purely tragic one
Lois dies first, and Clark’s life continues without her before he, too, reaches its end. The loss is real; the finale does not make a long life painless just because it is a happy one. Yet the couple’s reunion in the afterlife gives the closing movement a note of hope. Fletcher characterized the intended feeling as “happy-sad” and described the conclusion as inspiring in TV Insider’s interview. That balance lets sorrow register without making it the episode’s only final word.

Jonathan and Jordan inherit the work
The sons’ futures keep the ending from being only a farewell. Jonathan and Jordan become protectors in their own right and build families, carrying Superman’s work into another generation. Their path is not a substitute for Clark’s life; it is evidence that his example has taken root beyond him. The finale therefore offers closure for its central couple while leaving the world in capable hands.

There is no measured critical or audience ranking establishing that this finale outranks other Superman stories. Its case is interpretive: Superman & Lois joins a decisive action payoff to an unusually direct account of what comes after, giving Clark and Lois both a life story and a conclusion. Todd Helbing said the creators wanted the ending “to really have a meaning to it, so it would last with people and do something that other iterations weren’t able to do.” TV Insider’s interview

Fletcher also described the aim as making the ending definitive so viewers could feel the satisfaction of having made the full journey. The result takes a risk by spending its final stretch on mortality and memory rather than extending the action. For viewers who value emotional closure as much as a last triumph, that risk is what makes the finale stand out: Superman’s story ends, but the life he built—and the people shaped by it—does not.
TheWrap’s interview with Fletcher and Helbing also captures the creators’ willingness to make that definitive choice. Fletcher put it simply: “So we felt, let’s take a giant swing at it.”
