Spoilers for the Season 4 premiere and series finale: Clark dies in the premiere’s fight with Doomsday, then returns with a transplanted heart from General Sam Lane. That return has a lasting cost: Clark gradually loses his powers and ages. The finale later shows Lois dying first and Clark dying years afterward, when the two are reunited.
When does Superman die in Season 4?
There are two distinct deaths in Clark’s Season 4 story. His first happens in the season premiere during his battle with Doomsday, the monster unleashed by Lex Luthor. The CW’s listing for Episode 401, “The End & the Beginning,” describes Superman locked in battle with Luthor’s monster while Lois and the boys race to save General Sam Lane. The premiere’s shock is that Clark does not simply win the fight: he dies.
That is not his final death. Clark is brought back, survives the immediate crisis, and continues his life with Lois and their family. His eventual death comes much later, in the series finale.
How does Clark come back, and what does it cost him?
Clark returns to life after receiving a heart from his father-in-law, General Sam Lane. But the transplant does not restore him to his former condition indefinitely. He gradually loses his powers and ages as a human would. His return therefore gives him more life with his family, while also changing what that life will be: he is no longer destined to remain an ageless, fully powered Superman.

What happens in the series finale?
The series finale, “It Went by So Fast,” is Season 4, Episode 10, originally aired December 2, 2024. After the immediate danger has passed, the episode uses voiceover and a time-spanning sequence to show Clark and Lois growing old together.
Lois’s cancer returns, and she dies before Clark. Their sons carry on as heroes. Clark lives on for a time, then dies himself; the final sequence shows him reunited with Lois. The ending’s emotional force comes from the contrast between Superman’s first death in battle and this later, human end after a long life.

Why did the show tell a death-and-return story?
Co-showrunner Todd Helbing said the writers had considered the idea earlier, committed to it while setting up the end of Season 3, and settled on it after learning the final season would have ten episodes. He described the approach as drawing inspiration from iconic comic runs while giving the material a fresh Superman & Lois spin and emotional force.
Helbing also said the team had “43 hours” for viewers to become invested in the characters. That was his description in a 2024 interview, not an independently measured audience statistic.

What does the ending mean?
The events are clear: Clark and Lois grow old, Lois dies first, and Clark dies later and is reunited with her. What the final death means beyond those events is deliberately less fixed. Helbing described the finale’s last death as hopeful and full of light, while leaving its meaning open: “I think it’s up for interpretation.”
One reading is that the ending gives Superman a human arc. Clark’s first return does not erase death; it gives him more years with the people he loves, and those years have an eventual end. The finale also emphasizes family and legacy through the lives Lois and Clark build and the sons who continue as heroes. Those themes invite interpretation rather than establish a single definitive explanation.

The story takes inspiration from iconic Superman comics, but the evidence for the show’s stated approach supports a broad comparison—not an issue-by-issue account. The series puts particular weight on the cost of Clark’s return, the family’s years together, and the shape of a life that ends.
