Ransom Canyon’s family ties run through the Kirklands, Collinses, Brigmans, Russells and Fullers. Staten Kirkland’s late wife Amala and their son Randall anchor one branch; Lauren Brigman connects the Brigman and Russell families through romance, not blood; and Yancy Grey becomes Cap Fuller’s heir. Quinn’s central ties are friendship and love rather than kinship. This guide covers the Netflix series through season 2, including spoilers.
The Kirkland family and Staten’s connection to the Collinses
- Sam Kirkland is Staten Kirkland’s father.
- Staten and his late wife, Amala, had a son, Randall. Randall is a teenager when he dies in a car crash.
- Levi is Staten’s estranged half-brother. Season 2 adds Levi to the Kirkland family line.
- Davis Collins is Staten’s brother-in-law, and Reid Collins is Davis’s son—making Reid Staten’s nephew. Netflix’s cast guide does not specify which sibling creates the connection or identify a spouse, so the precise link should not be assumed.
What happened to Randall
The season 1 ending explainer reveals that Margaret Brigman was driving the car when Randall died, and Dan Brigman arrests her. Season 2 follows Margaret’s imprisonment and its effects on Lauren. These events connect the Kirkland and Brigman storylines through tragedy, not through a newly established family relationship.
Quinn’s ties: friendship, family and romance
Quinn O’Grady was Amala’s best friend and a high-school classmate of both Amala and Staten. She has loved Staten for a long time. Their connection is romantic, not a blood relationship. Netflix’s season 1 cast guide describes Quinn as returning to help a terminally ill friend and staying to protect the people she loves and the town.
- Claire is Quinn’s mother.
- Angie is Quinn’s sister.
- Ellie is Quinn’s close friend and business partner at Gracie’s, not her relative.
The Brigman and Russell families—and Lauren’s romances
- Sheriff Dan Brigman and Margaret Brigman are Lauren’s parents.
- Lucas and Kit Russell are brothers, with Kit the older one.
Lauren’s relationships with Reid, Lucas and Kit are romantic connections, not evidence of a family tie. Reid is Davis Collins’s son and Staten’s nephew by marriage; his connection to Lauren does not make the Collinses part of the Brigman family.

The Fuller family, Yancy and the ranch inheritance
Cap Fuller is Yancy Grey’s long-lost grandfather. After Cap dies, Yancy inherits Fuller Ranch. The inheritance is a transfer of property, not a separate family relationship.
- Sidney is Yancy’s legal wife. Season 2 says their marriage was part of Yancy’s con-man past.
- Ellie is pregnant with Yancy’s child. She is also Quinn’s friend and business partner; those are separate connections.

Why the relationships are easy to mix up
The series deliberately intertwines kinship, romance, loyalty and land. Creator April Blair describes its first-season organizing ideas as “land, love, and legacy,” and says its stories grow from questions about who people love and what home means to them. That framing helps explain why characters can be deeply connected without being relatives: Quinn’s place in Staten’s life, Lauren’s romances, and Yancy’s inheritance all matter to the story, but each represents a different kind of bond.

Is the Netflix series based on a book?
Netflix identifies Ransom Canyon as based on a book. Harlequin’s Fall 2025 catalog lists Jodi Thomas’s Ransom Canyon as a trade paperback and notes the Netflix adaptation. The television relationships above are drawn from Netflix’s series guides and ending explainer; the catalog does not establish that every relationship in the show matches the novels.
