In Season 4, Episode 3, “Always My Hero,” Doomsday snaps Sam’s neck. Sam’s heart then becomes the replacement that brings Superman back. That is not the series’ final death: the finale later depicts Lois and Clark dying decades into the future.
Who dies in the final-season twist?
Sam Lane, Lois’s father and a military general, dies in “Always My Hero,” which aired in October 2024. Doomsday is hunting Superman when Sam steps in to confront him. Sam has injected himself with a serum containing Superman’s blood, and Doomsday kills him by snapping his neck. How Sam’s death brings Superman back
Sam’s heart can replace Clark’s. At the end of the episode, Superman opens his eyes after receiving it. Sam understands the risk when he goes out to face Doomsday; his sacrifice makes Clark’s return possible.
The choice also resolves part of Sam’s relationship with Clark. Sam had once been cold toward his daughter’s husband, but his final act reflects a changed understanding between them. Co-showrunner Todd Helbing told TV Insider that the idea of using Sam’s heart felt like “such a perfect sort of ribbon on their relationship.” TV Insider, October 14, 2024.

Sam’s sacrifice and the finale’s later deaths are different events
The Sam Lane twist occurs in Episode 3. The series finale, “It Went By So Fast,” moves the story into a future epilogue and follows the later deaths of Lois and Clark. They are separate story beats: Sam dies so Clark can return, while the finale shows how Clark’s life eventually ends after that return.

What happens to Lois and Clark in the series finale?
The finale’s epilogue jumps more than 30 years into the future, according to TVLine’s December 2, 2024 recap. That is the outlet’s description of the time jump, not a precise measure of the characters’ lifespans. Lois’s cancer returns, and she dies surrounded by her family. After Clark’s death, the story reunites him with Lois. The show does not define exactly what that reunion means. Asked whether it should be understood as heaven, co-showrunner Todd Helbing said, “I think it’s up for interpretation.” TVLine, December 2, 2024.

The creators framed the finale as a definitive account of Clark and Lois’s lives together, rather than ending with the immediate victory over a threat. TheWrap reported that the showrunners wanted the audience to experience the whole journey and focus on the human values Clark holds dear: family, friendship, forgiveness, and love. Co-showrunner Brent Fletcher described the approach as a “giant swing.” TheWrap, December 2, 2024.
