Supergirl is DC’s 2026 film starring Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El. It draws on Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s comic series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, but director Craig Gillespie has said the film is different from the source. DC lists international release beginning June 24, 2026, and North American theatrical and IMAX release on June 26; those dates have passed, but the official pages do not establish the film’s current viewing availability.
What is the Supergirl movie about?
DC’s official synopsis sets Kara on an interstellar journey of vengeance and justice. When a ruthless adversary strikes too close to home, she reluctantly joins an unlikely companion. The synopsis presents Kara as a reluctant participant rather than a conventional, eager hero.

DC’s feature on the adaptation describes this version of Kara as cynical, tough and flawed. Milly Alcock summed up the character’s reluctance: “Kara doesn’t want to be a hero.”
Is Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow being adapted?
Yes. DC says the film is based on Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, an eight-issue limited series published in 2021, written by Tom King and illustrated by Bilquis Evely. The comic follows Kara’s encounter with Ruthye Marye Knoll, a farmer’s daughter seeking justice for her father’s murder.

The film uses that comic as its source, not as a promise of a page-by-page adaptation. Gillespie cautioned readers: “So, for everybody thumbing through that Tom King novel right now, it’s different.”
How might the film differ from the comic?
DC confirms that the adaptation differs, but its public description does not provide a scene-by-scene account of the changes. The clearest points of comparison are the broad story premise, Kara’s characterization, Ruthye’s pursuit of justice, and the shift from Evely’s comic art to a live-action film. The official synopsis emphasizes Kara’s reluctant partnership on a journey for vengeance and justice; it does not establish how closely the film follows each event in the comic.

For readers who want to explore the source, DC’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow collected edition is the comic the movie is based on. Keep in mind Gillespie’s stated distinction between the two versions.

What release dates did DC list?
DC’s film page gives June 24, 2026, as the start of international release and June 26, 2026, for North American theatrical and IMAX release. The official movie site also repeats the listed dates and synopsis. Both dates precede October 7, 2026, while the official pages still use upcoming-film language. Those listings alone do not confirm whether the film actually opened as scheduled or where it can be watched now; they also do not establish a current digital, physical-media or streaming release.
