Supacell uses a familiar superhero setup, but its strongest ideas are rooted in the everyday lives of Black South Londoners. The six-episode 2024 British drama is worth watching for its characters, performances and setting; its less frequent action and underpowered antagonist make it a less consistent superhero thriller.
What is Supacell about?
Netflix’s 2024 series follows five ordinary South Londoners who discover they have extraordinary abilities. Michael, played by Tosin Cole, is the central figure: he must bring the others together to save the woman he loves. The ensemble also includes Sabrina (Nadine Mills), Andre (Eric Kofi-Abrefa), Rodney (Calvin Demba) and Tazer (Josh Tedeku), with Adelayo Adedayo as Dionne. The series runs for six episodes.
Rather than beginning with a team of costumed heroes pursuing a public mission, the drama places powers inside lives already complicated by relationships, family responsibilities, work, money and conflict on the streets. Netflix Tudum quotes creator Rapman describing his aim as a story about people with powers who still have “relationship problems,” problems with their children and siblings, and difficulties at work and on the streets.
Does Supacell feel original, or like another superhero show?
Both impressions are fair, but they apply to different parts of the series. The broad ingredients are familiar: an ensemble discovers unusual abilities, a larger threat emerges, and the characters have to learn what they can do. The powers themselves also sit comfortably within recognizable superhero conventions.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What gives the show its identity is the specificity around that framework. These are Black Londoners with distinct pressures, not generic heroes whose ordinary lives disappear as soon as the plot turns to powers. Michael wants a stable future with Dionne; Andre is trying to provide for his son while his criminal record constrains him; Sabrina looks after her sister; Rodney faces family tensions; and Tazer balances gang leadership with care for the grandmother who raised him. The series uses Thamesmead as a real housing-estate location, giving its London setting a material presence rather than treating it as interchangeable city scenery.
Rapman has also questioned the standard costume convention. In a Netflix Tudum interview, he asks why a person who gains powers would suddenly wear “spandex and a cape and a mask,” then points to bills and the need to keep working. That perspective is reflected in a story where extraordinary abilities do not cancel ordinary obligations.

What works best in the drama?
The characters have lives beyond the premise
The family and financial pressures are not just background details attached to a superhero plot. They shape what the characters want, what they fear and how they respond to their abilities. That grounding helps the ensemble feel more particular than the familiar “strangers discover powers” outline might suggest.
The performances and plotting carry the familiar material
In her 2024 Guardian review, Leila Latif praised the performances, plotting, soundtrack and nuance of the five central characters. Those strengths matter because the show’s appeal depends less on inventing a wholly new superhero formula than on making its people and circumstances compelling within one.

Where does Supacell fall short?
The superhero machinery does not always feel as forceful as the personal drama. Latif found the action infrequent and the antagonist underpowered in the five episodes available to her for review. Those are her critical observations, not a measure of every viewer’s response, but they point to a real tension in the show: its character work can be more engaging than the scale or urgency of its genre conflict.
That unevenness helps explain why “déjà vu” is a useful description of the experience but not a complete verdict. Viewers looking for constant action or a formidable villain may find the series less satisfying; viewers drawn to character-led genre stories may find the familiar scaffolding a worthwhile route into its distinctive social setting.

What does the sickle-cell connection mean?
The series’ “supacell” is a fictional mutation of sickle cell disorder, not a medical claim that the disorder grants superpowers. Rapman has said he wanted the invented concept to help people with sickle cell disorder feel seen and empowered. That intention should not be mistaken for evidence of medical accuracy or a universal response from people with lived experience.
Is Supacell worth watching?
Yes, if you want a superhero drama whose most memorable material comes from the people beneath the powers. Supacell does not escape every familiar genre beat, and its action and antagonist may not satisfy viewers seeking a relentless superhero spectacle. Its South London setting, family and work pressures, and nuanced ensemble give those familiar elements a more specific point of view.
