On PBS’s Finding Your Roots, Sunny Hostin learned that the program’s researchers traced her maternal family line to Fermín Beza, an ancestor they said enslaved at least one person. Hostin reacted with shock and disappointment. A secondary report says the discovery deeply upset her mother, but the PBS transcript reviewed here does not document her crying.
What Sunny Hostin learned on Finding Your Roots
The disclosure came in Season 10, Episode 6, “Far and Away.” PBS’s transcript identifies Fermín Beza, born in 1824 and living in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, as Hostin’s third great-grandfather. The program traces the family line to Galicia, Spain. These are findings presented by the show’s researchers; the sources cited here do not independently verify the underlying archival records. Host Henry Louis Gates Jr. tells Hostin that Beza was the son of a merchant likely involved in the slave trade and that Beza himself owned at least one person. The distinction matters: the program describes the merchant’s involvement as likely, while it presents Beza’s ownership as its finding.
How Hostin reacted—and what she said about her mother
Hostin said, “I’m a little bit in shock.” She also expressed disappointment at learning of her Spanish roots and said she wished the information had been available for her children to know their history.

When Gates says Hostin’s mother will see how deeply White she is, Hostin responds, “So I hate this for her,” explaining that her mother identifies as Puerto Rican and non-White. The exchange captures Hostin’s concern about how the discovery might affect her mother, rather than establishing how her mother reacted privately.
Did Sunny Hostin’s mother cry?
A secondary transcript excerpt reports that Hostin described the revelation as deeply disappointing to her mother. However, the reviewed PBS episode transcript does not say that her mother cried. The crying detail should therefore be treated as a secondary report, not as something confirmed by the PBS transcript. See the secondary transcript excerpt.
