Natalie Barr’s “20-year milestone” referred to her time with Seven’s breakfast program—not 20 years as Sunrise co-host. In a PerthNow interview published on 17 March 2022, Barr was celebrating her first year in the co-host role alongside David Koch and looking forward to a family visit to Western Australia.
What the 20-year milestone meant
Barr told PerthNow she had been part of Seven’s breakfast program for 20 years. The interview marked a different, more recent milestone too: her first year as Sunrise co-host, a position she had taken up in 2021. Reflecting on settling into the role, she said, “I think everyone starts a new job with a bit of apprehension before settling in, and now I do feel really comfortable in the position”. PerthNow’s March 2022 interview is the source for both descriptions.
How Barr’s Seven career developed
The career timeline helps explain why different reports describe her time on Sunrise in different ways. The West Australian reported in 2014 that Barr began at Seven as a freelancer in December 1994 and moved to full-time work a few months later. In 2021, 7NEWS described her as having spent 18 years as Sunrise newsreader and regular fill-in co-host before becoming a permanent co-host. Those are distinct roles and retrospective counts, not interchangeable measures of time as the program’s formal co-host.
Seven’s current Sunrise team page describes Barr as part of Sunrise for more than 16 years. That wording uses a different reference point from the 2022 interview’s 20 years in Seven’s breakfast program. The dated descriptions are best read in their own context rather than combined into one precise tenure figure.

Why Barr planned to return to Western Australia
Barr grew up in Bunbury, Western Australia. In the 2022 interview, she said she planned to visit Dunsborough and then Bunbury in the coming weeks, after two Christmas visits had been cancelled. She described the long-awaited family trip this way: “We are finally getting there for the first time in over two years and are heading over in a few weeks”.
That was a plan she discussed in March 2022, not a current itinerary. It is also separate from later coverage: a 2023 7NEWS report described a Sunrise segment at her mother’s Bunbury home, where Barr found an old Channel Seven rejection letter.

What Barr said about checking ratings
The PerthNow interview also captured Barr’s view of the daily ratings routine: “I think you must be very relaxed if you work in TV and don’t check them because ratings are our bread and butter”. The same article said Sunrise had held the top national breakfast ratings position for 18 years, but did not identify the ratings publisher or methodology. That ranking should therefore be understood as a claim reported in the interview, not an independently verified statistic here.
