The “free historical fiction and contemporary books until Aug. 16” offer was a past promotion, not a current deal. An indexed headline places it in an August 2025 listing, but the original article is inaccessible and the exact titles, retailer links, and checkout prices could not be confirmed. If you found the headline now, treat it as a record of a past event—not a guarantee that any book is still free.
What the Aug. 16 offer was—and what is known
Stuff Your Kindle Day, also called Stuff Your E-Reader, is a recurring ebook promotion associated with multiple stores, not necessarily Amazon alone. A 2025 event explainer named Amazon Kindle, Apple Books, Google Play, and Kobo among the possible retailers; availability depends on the individual title and store. Woman & Home’s explainer describes the broader event, but its dates and links are time-sensitive and should not be treated as a current schedule.
The Aug. 16 headline appears in an August 2025 listing. The original Mashable article was blocked, so its exact year, book list, individual storefronts, and original prices at checkout could not be independently confirmed. The headline’s “100s” is promotional wording, not a verified count. No particular title can responsibly be described as free today on that evidence alone.
How to read a Kindle ebook without a Kindle device
You do not need to own an e-reader to read a Kindle ebook. Amazon says its free Kindle app works on supported phones, tablets, and computers. If you use the app on a phone or tablet, Amazon’s instructions are to buy the Kindle edition through a web browser; the book then appears in your app library. Amazon puts it plainly: “You can’t buy a Kindle book directly from the Kindle app or Amazon app.” Amazon’s guide to buying Kindle books explains the process.

- Open the Kindle app on a supported device and look for the book in your library.
If a future promotion lists a title through Apple Books, Google Play, Kobo, or another store, use that retailer’s listing and device instructions instead. A title’s inclusion in an event does not guarantee that it is offered by every participating store or in every format.
Promotional ebooks, library loans, and subscriptions are different
A promotional ebook is offered through a retailer’s listing, with the price and terms shown there at the time you claim it. A Libby ebook is a library loan, not a permanent event download. Libby says most of its books can be sent to a Kindle e-reader in the United States: choose “Read With,” select Kindle, then complete “Get Library Book” through Amazon. Availability and loan periods are governed by the library’s lending arrangement. Libby’s Kindle instructions provide the steps.

A subscription selection is a third, separate access model. The available information does not establish that the books in the Aug. 16 headline were subscription titles, so a subscription should not be presented as a way to claim that past offer.
