Spoilers for the opening of Stranger Things 5 and its finale. The season’s first five minutes revisit Will Byers’s disappearance in 1983: a Demogorgon drags him through the Upside Down to Vecna, who restrains him and begins a direct connection. Later episodes reveal that Will can turn that connection against Vecna’s creatures—and that he survives the final battle.
What the opening footage shows
Netflix’s Nov. 7, 2025 feature describes the first five minutes of the premiere, “The Crawl.” The scene is a flashback to 1983, when Will is alone in the Upside Down. He hides in a makeshift fort, but a Demogorgon finds him and pursues him through the forest.
The creature drags Will to Vecna’s lair. Vecna restrains him in vines, speaks to him, and puts a vine into his mouth. Vecna says, “At long last, we can begin,” then tells Will, “You and I, we’re going to do such beautiful things together.” The scene establishes that Will encountered Vecna during his original disappearance; it is not a second abduction happening nine years later.
Why the “9 years later” framing needs context
The season’s present-day story is set in fall 1987, according to Netflix’s official teaser synopsis, published Sept. 4, 2025. Hawkins is scarred by the Rifts and under military quarantine, and the anniversary of Will’s disappearance is approaching. The opening, however, goes back to 1983 to show part of that disappearance.
#1 Best Overall
So the key distinction is between the season’s 1987 setting and the 1983 flashback. The teaser synopsis establishes the present-day timeline; the premiere footage fills in what happened to Will when he first vanished.
What Will’s connection becomes
He uses it to control Demogorgons
The opening clip establishes the encounter with Vecna, but does not explain Will’s later abilities. Netflix’s Dec. 5, 2025 coverage of Noah Schnapp’s Episode 4 moment says Will takes control of Demogorgons and saves his friends. Schnapp described the moment as “the Holy Grail moment” for Will. Co-creator Ross Duffer said, “If anyone’s going to be the key to ending Vecna, it needed to be Will.”

What to take away from the footage and ending

- Will’s connection to Vecna and the Upside Down later becomes something he can use against the creatures.
- He helps his friends in Episode 4 and contributes to the final fight; he survives and is shown finding acceptance afterward.
