If your Streamlabs Talk Studio source is black, first check that the right camera or screen share is selected, allowed by your browser and operating system, and set to show on stream. If another app is using the camera, close it and relaunch your browser. These checks target capture inside Talk Studio; a black image only on YouTube needs to be distinguished from a source that is already black in the studio.
First identify where the image turns black
Look at the Talk Studio studio view before changing settings. Is the camera or screen share black in the studio, or does it look correct there but appear black at the YouTube destination? Streamlabs’ Talk Studio guidance covers capture permissions, choosing a source, and displaying it in the stream layout. It does not specifically document a fix for a source that looks correct in the studio but black only on YouTube.
- Black in Talk Studio: follow the camera or screen-share checks below, depending on the source.
- Correct in Talk Studio, black only on YouTube: the capture steps below may not address the problem. Avoid treating a YouTube-side symptom as proof that your camera is faulty.
Fix a black camera source
1. Select the intended camera and show it on stream
Talk Studio lists cameras, screen shares, co-hosts, and guests in the source panel on the left. Use the arrow beside Stop Video to open Video Input and choose the camera you intend to use. Then check that its source is set to Show on stream, not Hide on stream. A camera can be selected and working but still be absent from the outgoing layout if its source is hidden.
2. Allow camera access in the browser
When Talk Studio opens, the browser should ask to use your devices. If you did not see the prompt, or previously denied access, use the site controls beside the address bar to allow camera access, then refresh the browser. Firefox is supported, but Streamlabs notes that some features may be limited; check Firefox’s camera and microphone permission indicator if you use it.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
3. Check your operating system’s camera permission
- Windows: open Settings > Privacy > Camera. Check that camera access is enabled, including access for desktop apps.
- Mac: open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera and make sure your browser is allowed.
Browser permission and operating-system permission are separate checks. Allowing the site in the browser will not help if the operating system blocks the browser from using the camera.
4. Close apps that may be using the camera
Another application using the camera can prevent Talk Studio from accessing it. Close other camera-using apps, then relaunch your browser and reopen Talk Studio. If the camera works after that, the issue was likely camera access contention rather than a need to replace the device.

Fix a black screen-share source on Mac
Allow screen recording for your browser
On Mac, open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Screen Recording and add or enable the browser you use for Talk Studio. Relaunch the browser if macOS prompts you to do so. Without this operating-system permission, Talk Studio may not be able to capture the screen.
Choose the right shared item and display it
Talk Studio can share an entire screen, a browser window or tab, and slide, image, or PowerPoint files; it also supports video and background audio. After starting the share, check that the intended screen-share source appears in the left source panel and is set to Show on stream. If the studio view is black, confirm that you shared the window, tab, or screen containing the material you expect to see.

Check general setup after source permissions
Streamlabs recommends Google Chrome or Safari and a stable internet connection. Its Talk Studio Getting Started guidance lists these upload speeds:
| Stream resolution | Upload speed listed as required | Upload speed recommended |
|---|---|---|
| 720p | 5 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p | 10 Mbps | 20 Mbps |
These are Streamlabs setup recommendations, not evidence that a slow connection is the cause of a black camera image. Check the source selection and permissions first.

Common missteps and when hardware is relevant
- Buying a webcam before checking access: first confirm browser and operating-system permissions, the selected Video Input, source visibility, and whether another app has the camera.
- Assuming a selected source is automatically in the layout: check that it says Show on stream.
- Applying playback fixes to a capture problem: YouTube’s help about a green image in its video player concerns playback, not a black camera source in Talk Studio. Its suggestions, such as changing browser or graphics settings, do not establish a Talk Studio capture fix.
- Replacing a cable, hub, webcam, or capture device: consider hardware only after the permission, selection, visibility, and app-contention checks fail and you have evidence the device itself is faulty or insufficient.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous YouTube stream from uploaded recordings rather than live camera capture, StreamNeo is a separate option; it does not repair a black Talk Studio camera or go live from a camera. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month.
