Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteMost creators should start with OBS Studio if they want a configurable encoder and are comfortable setting up scenes and audio. Streamlabs Desktop may be a better fit if its guided setup and integrated presentation tools suit the way you produce a show—and your PC has enough headroom. Neither is proven to keep a 24/7 stream online more reliably. For either app, test your own connection and setup; YouTube may not archive a stream that runs longer than 12 hours.
What matters more than the app for a 24/7 stream?
OBS Studio and Streamlabs Desktop are desktop encoders: your computer processes and sends the video to YouTube. Continuity therefore depends on the whole setup, including the PC, encoder load, scene complexity, sustained upload, power and monitoring—not just which application you install. The cited vendor guidance does not include a controlled 24/7 reliability comparison, or an India-specific comparison of internet performance. Neither app should be treated as an uptime guarantee.
For a documentary channel, first decide whether you are broadcasting a live production—with changing sources, overlays, microphones or a camera—or repeatedly playing a finished video. The former calls for an encoder workflow. If you only need to play uploaded videos continuously, a cloud loop is another approach; that distinction is explained below.
OBS Studio vs Streamlabs Desktop
| Decision point | OBS Studio | Streamlabs Desktop |
|---|---|---|
| Setup and control | Has an Auto-Configuration Wizard that considers intended use, computer hardware and network conditions. You then add sources, check audio and output settings, and test. OBS quick start guide | May suit a creator who prefers guided onboarding and integrated presentation tools. The cited system-requirements page does not establish that those tools make a continuous stream more reliable. |
| Published system guidance | OBS lists Windows 10/11 with a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU; macOS 11 or later with Intel or Apple Silicon and an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU; and Linux/Unix with an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU and X or Wayland. The requirements page is dated 2021, so it is not a promise about every current OS build or OBS release. OBS also cautions that compatibility does not guarantee the machine can handle a particular stream load. OBS system requirements | Streamlabs lists Windows 10 or macOS 12+ and 8 GB RAM as minimums. Its recommended setup includes an Intel Core i5 11th/12th generation or AMD Ryzen 5000 series or higher, Nvidia RTX 20/30 or AMD RX 5000/6000 series, 16 GB+ RAM, a 512 GB+ SSD and Ethernet. This is Streamlabs’ guidance, not a tested comparison with OBS. Streamlabs Desktop system requirements |
| Resource planning | CPU demand depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity. A simple static scene and a complex scene with animated overlays or many sources do not impose the same load. | Streamlabs says needs vary with content, other software and hardware, particularly for resource-intensive games, digital art, animated overlays or advanced plugins. Its recommended specs are a planning baseline, not proof those parts alone will sustain a 24/7 broadcast. |
| Continuous uptime evidence | No 24/7 reliability result is established by the cited OBS guidance. | No 24/7 reliability result is established by the cited Streamlabs guidance. |
For a documentary stream, choose the workflow that comfortably handles your actual sources, audio devices and overlays. If Streamlabs’ built-in presentation workflow saves you setup effort and your computer meets its recommended guidance, it is a reasonable choice. If you want more direct control and a wizard that factors in hardware and network conditions, OBS is the stronger default. In either case, make the decision with a representative test, not an assumption that one app is inherently safer for a long run.

Set a sustainable YouTube encoder configuration
There is no special bitrate setting for India in the cited YouTube guidance. Set quality according to the upload speed your connection can sustain, not its advertised or momentary peak. YouTube recommends testing upload speed, trying representative audio and motion before the event, and monitoring stream health and messages while live. It transcodes an incoming stream for viewers on different devices and networks, so sending a higher resolution does not mean every viewer receives that exact format.
YouTube’s recommended video bitrates
The following are YouTube’s recommended ingestion bitrates in its encoder guidance, accessed in 2026. They vary by codec, resolution and frame rate; they are not guarantees of delivery quality or a substitute for stable upload headroom.

| Resolution and frame rate | H.264 recommendation | AV1/H.265 recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
These codec-specific recommendations are not interchangeable settings: select a codec your encoder and hardware support, then check YouTube’s current guidance for the matching option. For the cited settings, YouTube specifies RTMP or RTMPS, H.264/H.265/AV1 video options, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval (do not exceed four seconds). YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the data through Google’s servers. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance.
Make a connection test meaningful
- Measure upload on the same connection and, as far as possible, in the conditions and at the time you expect to stream.
- Choose a resolution and frame rate that leave room between the stream’s required bitrate and your reliably available upload. If the connection fluctuates or the PC struggles, lower quality rather than relying on a peak speed result.
- Test with the real scene, audio devices and representative motion. A static title card alone may not reveal problems that appear when a video or animated overlay is active.
- While live, watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators and messages. A successful initial connection does not establish that the stream will remain healthy for a full day.
Prepare the channel, stream key and archive plan
Check YouTube live eligibility
YouTube’s live-start guidance says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days; it also says streamers must be at least 16 years old. Encoder streaming is suited to productions using gameplay, overlays or external audio and video equipment. Check YouTube’s live-streaming requirements before scheduling a first broadcast.

Use the stream key carefully
In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the stream and copy its stream key into the encoder’s stream settings. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send a stream to your channel. Do not publish it, include it in a recording or screenshot, or share it with an untrusted person. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube and update the encoder that uses it. When using Live Control Room, set resolution, frame rate and bitrate in the encoder as required by YouTube’s guidance.
Plan for YouTube’s 12-hour archive limit
YouTube can automatically archive a live stream if it is less than 12 hours. It warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all and recommends making a local recording as backup. A 24-hour broadcast should therefore have an intentional archive plan rather than relying on YouTube to retain the entire stream. Check that the computer has enough storage for the intended recording and that the recording path is available before going live. YouTube archive guidance

Run a preflight before leaving the stream unattended
- Configure the encoder. In OBS, start with the Auto-Configuration Wizard, then add the sources your show needs and confirm the audio devices and output settings. In Streamlabs Desktop, configure the equivalent stream, scene and audio components for your production. Keep the scene simple enough for the PC to sustain.
- Connect to YouTube. Select the correct YouTube stream in Live Control Room and enter its stream key in the encoder. Confirm the destination and stream details before starting.
- Check picture and sound. Start a short test and verify that motion looks as expected, microphones or other audio are present, levels are not clipping, and no source is missing. OBS’s quick-start guidance recommends checking audio meters and devices and running a test instead of immediately beginning a real broadcast.
- Test the demanding parts. Let representative footage, overlays and audio run long enough to reveal the load your normal scene creates. Watch for dropped frames, unstable stream health, excessive CPU/GPU use or audio drift; reduce scene complexity or output demands if the machine cannot sustain them.
- Confirm recording and monitoring. Check that local recording works and has sufficient disk space, and decide who will monitor YouTube’s health messages and respond if the connection or encoder stops.
Troubleshooting a long-running stream
| Symptom | Likely cause to check | Practical fix |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube reports unstable stream health or the stream buffers | Upload is fluctuating or the selected bitrate is too demanding for the connection. | Run an upload test under representative conditions, lower bitrate or output quality, and repeat a test while watching YouTube’s health messages. |
| Frames drop or the computer becomes sluggish | The encoder, resolution, frame rate or scene may exceed the PC’s sustained capacity. | Reduce scene complexity, disable unnecessary animated sources, lower output demands, and retest. OBS notes that system compatibility alone does not establish capability at a chosen load. |
| Viewers cannot hear a source or hear distorted audio | The wrong device may be selected, a source may be muted, or levels may be too high. | Check the encoder’s audio meters and device selection, then test speech or program audio before the full broadcast. |
| The encoder connects to the wrong broadcast or fails to authenticate | The selected YouTube event or stream key may not match the intended broadcast. | Verify the destination in Live Control Room and re-enter the matching key. Reset a key that may have been exposed. |
| The stream ends while no one is watching the PC | The computer, power, network or encoder may have stopped; a desktop app does not remove those dependencies. | Check the PC and connection logs or messages, test the setup again, and establish a monitoring and recovery plan before the next unattended run. |
| The complete 24-hour program is missing from YouTube’s archive | A stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured by YouTube. | Use a tested local recording or another deliberate archive workflow for the full program. |
Copyright and reused footage are separate from encoder choice
OBS and Streamlabs transmit what you send; choosing one does not grant rights to the documentary, film clips, music, narration or other material in the broadcast. Use content you own or have permission to use, and check the applicable YouTube rules before running a continuous channel. A live presentation is not, by itself, proof that reused material is original or that it qualifies for monetization. Keep records of licenses and permissions, and review StreamNeo’s copyright safety checklist as a practical preflight resource; it does not replace YouTube’s policies or legal advice.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping on YouTube—not to broadcast a live camera or operate a changing production—StreamNeo is a different option from either desktop encoder. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on.
