Those symptoms point to different parts of the pipeline. In Streamlabs, lagged frames usually point to rendering or GPU pressure, skipped frames to encoder pressure, and dropped frames to network delivery. If only YouTube viewers buffer and Streamlabs shows no matching warning, check YouTube’s stream-health messages before changing encoder settings.
Identify where the buffering happens
“Buffering” is a viewer description, not a diagnosis. A prerecorded video still has to be rendered in Streamlabs, encoded, sent over your network to YouTube, and delivered to viewers. A fault or overload at any of those stages can look like stuttering.
- Local preview stutters: check rendering load and GPU capacity, then simplify the scene or reduce output demand.
- Streamlabs reports lagged frames: Streamlabs describes these as compositor/rendering problems, commonly associated with high GPU use.
- Streamlabs reports skipped frames: these indicate encoder overload; CPU load is a common factor, especially with software x264 encoding.
- Streamlabs reports dropped frames: investigate network delivery, upload stability, local network equipment, and the selected ingest server.
- Only YouTube viewers buffer: compare the local preview with YouTube’s stream health and messages. Without those observations, the cause could be in the stream path or the playback path; the symptom alone does not establish which.
Streamlabs Support’s general guidance says dropped frames or disconnections are “almost always a network issue.” Treat that as a troubleshooting pointer, not a diagnosis of your connection.
Follow the symptom to the likely cause
Lagged frames or a stuttering preview: reduce rendering pressure
Check GPU use while the stream is running. Close unnecessary GPU-heavy applications and simplify the Streamlabs scene—especially animated or video sources, overlays, and effects you do not need. If the output resolution or frame rate is higher than your system can render reliably, reduce it and test again. Streamlabs’ getting-started guide presents 1280×720 as a performance/quality balance, but it is a possible starting point, not a universal requirement for YouTube.

Streamlabs also suggests lowering game quality, limiting game frame rate, or using V-sync in gaming scenarios. Those steps matter only if a game or another high-load workload is running alongside the prerecorded video.
Skipped frames: ease encoder load
Check CPU use and the selected encoder. If you use software x264 and CPU load is high, try a faster x264 preset; it generally trades some compression efficiency for lower processing demand. Alternatively, test a supported hardware encoder such as NVENC or AMD encoding if it is available in your Streamlabs version and on your system. Change one setting at a time and compare the skipped-frame counter during a representative test.

Dropped frames: investigate the network path
- Compare bitrate with sustained upload capacity. Include both audio and video bitrate. A speed test is only a snapshot: it cannot establish that upload remains stable during a stream or rule out packet loss.
- If you are on Wi-Fi, make a wired comparison. An Ethernet connection is a useful isolation test, not a guaranteed fix. Restart existing modem, router, or switch equipment, then test again.
- Try a nearby ingest server. If Streamlabs is set to Auto, manually test the closest or second-closest server where that option is available.
- If the problem persists, check the network connection itself. Streamlabs suggests checking or reinstalling network drivers and contacting your ISP if packet loss or connection problems continue. Its support guidance also mentions outbound TCP port 1935; do not open ports blindly—ask your network administrator, ISP, or router provider for advice appropriate to your network.
Only YouTube viewers buffer: inspect stream health
Check YouTube’s live control room for stream-health messages during the event and compare them with what you see in the local preview and Streamlabs counters. If Streamlabs reports no frame issue, avoid assuming that lowering bitrate will fix the viewer-side symptom. YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends testing before a stream and monitoring stream health and messages; the available observations determine which branch to investigate next.
Set YouTube encoder settings for the output you actually send
Choose settings from YouTube’s current encoder guidance for your codec, resolution, and frame rate, then confirm your connection can sustain the combined audio and video bitrate. YouTube’s retrieved H.264 table recommends 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps (minimum 6 Mbps) and 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps (minimum 5 Mbps). These are YouTube’s listed recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular connection or encoder will sustain them.

- Rate control: YouTube recommends CBR.
Do not copy settings intended for another platform or use a bitrate above what your upload can sustain. Test with the same kind of audio and motion as the actual prerecorded program; a static screen is not a representative test if the video contains frequent movement.
Use Dynamic Bitrate only for network-related drops
Streamlabs’ Dynamic Bitrate setting can reduce bitrate during network trouble and raise it toward the target when conditions recover. It is intended to help with network-related dropped frames; it does not resolve an overloaded CPU encoder or GPU compositor.

In Streamlabs Desktop, look under Settings > Advanced for “Dynamically change bitrate when dropping frames while streaming.” The menu wording may vary by version. Enable it only as a network aid, then check whether dropped frames improve and whether the resulting stream remains suitable for viewers.

- Record the symptom: preview stutter, Streamlabs frame category and counter, YouTube viewer buffering, or a difference between live playback and the archive.
- Note YouTube’s stream-health messages and your current resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and encoder.
- Choose the branch that matches the evidence: rendering for lagged frames, encoding for skipped frames, network delivery for dropped frames, or YouTube stream health when only viewers report buffering.
- Change one relevant setting or connection condition, then test with representative prerecorded content and audio.
- Keep the change only if the matching symptom improves; otherwise restore it and test the next likely cause.
YouTube Help specifically advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” A preflight also gives you a baseline to compare if the problem returns.

If the stream will not start, check the YouTube event connection
A failure to start is different from buffering during an active stream. Streamlabs documents connecting a YouTube account, creating an event in YouTube Studio, and selecting that event in the Streamlabs Go Live window. Its going-live troubleshooting also covers reloading or manually selecting a server and other connection checks. These steps address event setup or connection failures; they do not, by themselves, explain ongoing viewer buffering.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep prerecorded videos looping live on YouTube, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload your video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
