A stream sponsorship is more than a cash payment: a free product, service, or other benefit can also create a relationship viewers should know about. Disclose that relationship clearly in the stream itself, use the platform’s required branded-content control, and check the rules that apply where you and your audience are located. Twitch and YouTube have different controls, and neither platform tool automatically settles every legal disclosure obligation.
What counts as a stream sponsorship?
On both Twitch and YouTube, branded content can involve an exchange of value, not just a fee. Payment, a free product or service, or another benefit can make a stream sponsored or branded. The relevant question is whether a brand relationship influenced the content or you are featuring, discussing, or promoting something in return for value.
Twitch’s Branded Content Guidelines give examples including product placements, endorsements, sponsored gameplay, paid unboxings, channel sponsorships, branded panels, and stream-logo overlays. YouTube’s Branded Content Policies cover content influenced by a brand partner in exchange for value, including livestreams.
What to do before accepting a deal
Get the practical terms in writing before you agree. There is no universal standard rate or contract structure established by the platform policies discussed here, so do not assume a suggested fee or a brand’s template is an industry rule.

- Timing: Agree on the campaign dates, stream length if relevant, and any deadlines for approval or publication.
- Exclusivity: Clarify whether you are being asked to avoid competitors, and for what period or category.
- Usage rights: Establish whether the brand may reuse clips, recordings, or other stream content, and on which channels or for how long.
- Approval: Define whether the sponsor can review content before it goes live and what changes it may request.
- Payment and benefits: Record the amount or non-cash benefit, payment timing, and any conditions attached to it.
- Disclosure: Agree on the accurate description of the relationship and who is responsible for providing the required campaign information.
For significant contract or legal questions, consult a qualified professional familiar with the rules that apply to your location and audience.
How to disclose a sponsorship on Twitch
Twitch’s Branded Content Guidelines say creators should use the disclosure tool in Creator Dashboard when branded content is a central and intentional part of a livestream, and should make sure the promoted product or service is permitted. Twitch’s Terms of Service, section 9, also state that creators who publish Branded Content must use Twitch’s Branded Content tool. Twitch describes that tool as giving viewers written disclosure.

The guidelines give examples that do not, by themselves, require the tool: a sponsor panel on an offline channel page, a product visible in the room without paid active promotion, or an affiliate link shared in response to a community question. Those examples concern Twitch’s tool policy; they do not remove any separate legal duty to disclose a material connection.
- Identify whether the stream has a paid or otherwise compensated brand element, including a free product or service.
- For a central, intentional branded element, open the Creator Dashboard and use Twitch’s Branded Content disclosure tool.
- Also tell viewers plainly what the relationship is, using an on-stream disclosure that suits the actual deal.
- Check Twitch’s current branded-content rules for the product or service before promoting it.
Twitch’s Terms of Service put responsibility for following applicable laws and guidelines on the creator. The platform control is not a legal safe harbor.

How to disclose a sponsorship on YouTube
YouTube requires creators to enable the paid-promotion declaration in Studio when content contains branded content, including livestreams. The requirement applies to brand relationships involving value such as payment, free products, or sponsorships. In YouTube Help’s Branded Content Policies, the instruction is: “If your video contains branded content, you must let us know using the paid promotion declaration in Studio.” The declaration does not replace your responsibility to make the relationship clear and prominent to viewers or comply with applicable law.
- Before going live, open the livestream’s settings in YouTube Studio and enable the paid-promotion declaration for the stream. Check YouTube’s current Studio labels and instructions, which may change.
- Put a clear disclosure in the stream description so viewers can see the relationship before opening the stream.
- Say the disclosure aloud and make it visible on screen. Keep it understandable if a viewer watches with sound off or misses the text.
- Check YouTube’s current branded-content rules for the promoted category, audience, and geography.
What should the disclosure say, and when?
Use ordinary language that identifies the real connection. For example: “This stream is sponsored by [Brand]” or “[Brand] gave me this product to try.” If the benefit was a free product rather than cash, say that rather than implying a different arrangement. Put the disclosure close to the endorsement, not where viewers have to hunt for it.
The FTC’s November 2019 staff guide, Disclosures 101 for Social Media Influencers, recommends an in-video disclosure instead of relying only on a description. Using both audio and on-screen text helps reach viewers who watch muted or miss the text. The FTC’s 2023 endorsement FAQ addresses a multi-hour live gaming endorsement directly: an opening-only disclosure may be missed by people who join later. It recommends periodic disclosures or a continuous, clear and conspicuous disclosure, as well as a disclosure in the stream description before viewers click through.

- Make the relationship understandable without requiring viewers to decode a brand tag, logo, or platform badge.
- Repeat the disclosure periodically during a long stream, or keep a clear disclosure continuously visible.
- Use the language of the endorsement so the message is clear to the audience you are addressing.
- Use Twitch’s or YouTube’s required platform control as well as your viewer-facing disclosure; a platform feature alone may not explain the relationship adequately in every context.
The FTC materials describe U.S. guidance. Legal obligations vary by jurisdiction, and platform controls do not automatically satisfy every applicable law. Check the rules relevant to you, the brand, and your audience.
What products can you promote?
Platform restrictions differ, and lists can change. YouTube’s current policy page identifies weapons or ammunition, recreational drugs, hacking software, counterfeit products, and academic essay-writing services as examples of prohibited branded-content categories. It lists alcohol, financial services, healthcare and medicines, gambling, and election or political content as examples of restricted categories. YouTube says its lists are not complete. Check the current policy for the specific product, geography, and audience rather than assuming a category is allowed everywhere.

Twitch’s Branded Content Guidelines likewise require creators to ensure that a promoted product or service is permitted. Confirm the current Twitch rules before agreeing to a campaign, especially when the product or audience raises regulatory or age-related concerns.

Sponsorship Tool and Open Invitation campaigns
Twitch documents Open Invitation campaigns through the Creator Dashboard Sponsorship Tool. Eligibility for campaign invitations depends on factors such as geography, stream content, and profile information; access is not guaranteed for every creator. Review the campaign terms and required deliverables before opting in.
How to keep an endorsement honest
A sponsor brief does not make unsupported claims safe to repeat. FTC staff guidance says creators should not describe product experience they have not had, call something terrific if they thought it was terrible, or make claims that require evidence the advertiser does not have.
- Only describe experiences you genuinely had.
- Separate your own opinion from factual claims about performance, health, safety, or results.
- Ask the sponsor for support for claims that need substantiation; if adequate support is unavailable, do not make the claim.
- Do not let a required talking point imply more than you know or believe.

In either case, the platform control is only one part of disclosure. The audience still needs an understandable explanation of the relationship while watching.
