Spoilers for all five seasons. Ranked by narrative cohesion, character development, pacing, tonal balance, and how well each ending pays off its setup, Stranger Things comes out in this order: Season 5, Season 3, Season 4, Season 2, then Season 1—from weakest to strongest. Seasons 3 and 4 are close enough to swap depending on whether you value a more playful ensemble adventure or bigger horror and spectacle. This is an editorial judgment, not an objective verdict; Rotten Tomatoes’ current critic scores offer useful context, but they do not settle the ranking.
How this ranking weighs each season
The order favors seasons that keep their central story coherent, give the ensemble meaningful work, maintain momentum across subplots, and deliver an ending that feels earned. Tone and scale matter, too, but spectacle cannot make up for a story that feels less focused. Viewers who prize the original small-town mystery above all else may put Season 1 first; those who want the largest emotional and visual set pieces may prefer Season 4.
Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer scores provide a separate measure: critic-review aggregates that can change as reviews are added or the page updates. As of October 8, 2026, the scores are Season 1: 97%, Season 2: 94%, Seasons 3 and 4: 89% each, and Season 5: 83%. They are not audience scores, and a percentage is not a definitive measure of quality. Rotten Tomatoes’ season page
5. Season 5
The completed series finale places Season 5 last in this ranking—not because it lacks emotional ambition, but because its enormous concluding stakes make the season a harder balancing act. It has to carry the mythology, the action, and the characters’ farewells at once. For this ranking, that pressure leaves it less cohesive than the seasons above it, even as it brings the story to its endpoint.

The finale runs 2 hours and 5 minutes, according to Netflix Tudum. Matt Duffer described its emotional focus as “this group of characters saying goodbye to their childhood.” That aim helps explain why the ending’s character goodbyes matter as much as its supernatural resolution. Season 5 has the lowest current Tomatometer score of the five at 83%, though that remains a positive critic aggregate, not a measure of audience response.
4. Season 3
Season 3 leans into summer color, comedy, and a broader ensemble, turning Hawkins into a livelier and more public-facing battleground. Its tonal shift gives the show a welcome change of pace, and the Dustin-and-Suzie duet of “The NeverEnding Story” became one of the series’ most-rewatched scenes, according to Netflix’s franchise retrospective.

That same playful energy sometimes competes with the season’s darker threat. The ranking puts Season 3 just below Season 4 because its comic detours make the overall build feel less tightly controlled. The distinction is narrow: both seasons have an 89% Tomatometer score in the October 8, 2026 snapshot, so that aggregate does not break the tie.
3. Season 4
Season 4 expands the show’s horror vocabulary and raises the scale of its conflicts. Its Nancy-and-Vecna sequence is the series’ most-rewatched scene, Netflix reports. The season’s most powerful stretches connect that striking horror imagery to the characters’ fear and vulnerability, giving its spectacle a personal cost.

Its ambition also creates a pacing trade-off: a larger story spread across separated groups can make the path to the payoff feel longer. Season 4 ranks above Season 3 here because its horror and emotional stakes hold together more effectively, though viewers who prefer comedy and ensemble chemistry may reverse them. Netflix executive producer Shawn Levy said the final season’s “action is next level” while its “emotional center remains the same”; that description captures the series’ continuing effort to pair scale with feeling, rather than settling the comparison between these two seasons.
2. Season 2
Season 2 has the difficult job of following the original mystery while showing that its consequences are not over. It deepens the relationships and extends the threat beyond a single disappearance, giving the story room to grow without abandoning Hawkins as its emotional center. Its 94% Tomatometer score is second-highest in the current snapshot, matching its strong standing with critics.
Rank #4
It falls short of Season 1 in this ranking because the first season’s simpler mystery is more concentrated. Season 2 is the stronger pick if character development and the sense of a world widening matter more to you than the precision of a self-contained opening story.
1. Season 1
Season 1 is the strongest overall because its mystery, character introductions, small-town setting, and supernatural menace reinforce one another from the start. The search for Will gives the children, teenagers, and adults a shared purpose, while the season reveals its strange world in measured steps. Its scale is smaller than later installments, but that restraint makes the suspense feel immediate and the emotional relationships central to the plot.

It also delivers the cleanest setup-and-payoff arc of the series: the mystery drives the season, and the ending resolves enough to satisfy while leaving room for what follows. Season 1 has the highest current Tomatometer score, 97%, but the case for ranking it first rests on its focus and lasting dramatic shape—not on the percentage alone.

The Tomatometer snapshot happens to place Seasons 1 and 2 first, ties Seasons 3 and 4, and puts Season 5 last. That is useful reception context, but it is a separate ranking method from the one used here. Netflix reported 275 million combined views for all five seasons in the second half of 2025, when each season appeared among its 15 most-watched shows for that reporting period. That figure covers one half-year, not lifetime viewing, and does not show which season viewers consider best. Netflix’s viewing report
The full ranking at a glance
| Rank (worst to best) | Season | Tomatometer as of October 8, 2026 | Why it lands here |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | Season 5 | 83% | Emotionally ambitious conclusion, but its many endgame demands make it the least cohesive in this ranking. |
| 4 | Season 3 | 89% | Colorful ensemble energy and memorable comedy, with tonal detours that loosen the build. |
| 3 | Season 4 | 89% | Stronger horror and emotional stakes, balanced against a more sprawling structure. |
| 2 | Season 2 | 94% | Builds character and mythology while retaining a strong connection to the first season. |
| 1 | Season 1 | 97% | The most focused mystery and the clearest match between setup, suspense, and payoff. |
The show is complete at five seasons and 42 episodes, spanning more than 2,500 minutes, according to Netflix’s series retrospective. Season 5 arrived in three batches: four episodes on November 26, 2025, three on December 25, and the finale on December 31 in the United States and Canada; some regions received the finale on January 1, 2026. Netflix’s series page identifies the five-season run.
