At the end of Part 1, Will uses his connection to Vecna to psychically stop Demogorgons attacking his friends. The reveal makes Will a possible weapon against the enemy who first took him—but it does not explain the full limits of his ability or settle the conflict. Meanwhile, Holly Wheeler has been abducted, and Vecna has described a plan involving 12 children.
What happened at the end of Stranger Things Season 5 Part 1?
Volume 1 ends in the middle of a Demogorgon attack. Will reaches through his connection to Vecna and psychically takes down the creatures, freeing his friends from their assault. It is a sudden shift in what Will can do, but the moment grows out of his history: Vecna took him in Season 1, and Will has remained connected to the threat ever since.
Co-creator Ross Duffer said, “If anyone [was] going to be the key to ending Vecna, it needed to be Will.” He also described the story’s return to its starting point: “He was the kid who was taken in Season 1, so it felt right for the story to come full circle.” The scene is both a practical intervention in the attack and an emotional reversal: the child who was once helpless against Vecna may now be able to use that connection against him. Netflix’s ending explainer and creator interviews connect the reveal to Will’s earlier possession and his personal development.
Does Will have powers?
Part 1 establishes that Will can exert a psychic force against the Demogorgons, but it does not present the moment as proof of a separate, fully explained ability. Netflix’s account ties what happens to his established connection to Vecna and the history of his possession. Matt Duffer also connected the awakening to Will’s development and acceptance of himself.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The distinction matters: the scene shows Will accessing something powerful through that connection, not a complete set of powers with known rules. The Volume 1 ending leaves open how deliberately he can use it, what it costs, and whether it can help him confront Vecna directly.
What does Vecna want?
By Episode 4, Vecna says he needs 12 children as “perfect vessels” to refashion the world. In his account, Will’s abduction years earlier showed him what was possible. That is Vecna’s explanation of his plan in the episode, as summarized by Netflix’s official Volume 1 explainer; it is not, by itself, a complete explanation of the Upside Down’s origin.

The plan makes the children’s danger more than a series of isolated attacks. But at the Volume 1 break, the show has not resolved what Vecna’s intended transformation would mean in practice—or how the group can stop it.
What happened to Holly?
Holly Wheeler is taken by a Demogorgon during Volume 1. Her mother, Karen, tries to save her, but Holly’s fate remains a cliffhanger at the end of Episode 4. The abduction echoes the series’ original missing-child premise, this time with the Wheeler family at the center.

Actor Nell Fisher described the shift in Holly’s role this season: “Holly’s been important but on the periphery, and this season, Holly becomes a protagonist.” The capture raises the stakes for her family and connects directly to Vecna’s stated interest in children; Volume 1 does not reveal what ultimately happens to her. Netflix’s interview with Fisher discusses Holly’s expanded role.
What is the military doing in Hawkins?
Hawkins is under quarantine after the Rifts opened. Military personnel are experimenting on Upside Down creatures, while Dr. Kay is focused on finding Eleven, according to Netflix’s Volume 1 explainer. That leaves the group facing pressure on two fronts: Vecna’s plan and a military operation with its own agenda.

Who dies in Stranger Things Season 5 Part 1?
The available official explainers and interviews do not establish a complete, episode-by-episode death list for Volume 1. The ending centers on Will’s intervention and Holly’s abduction, but those facts alone do not establish the fate of every character. It would be misleading to infer either that a major character dies or that everyone survives from the information summarized here.
When did Part 2 come out, and what’s next?
The release schedule is now historical: Stranger Things Season 5 has been fully released. Netflix scheduled Volume 1 (four episodes) for November 26, 2025; Volume 2 (three episodes) for December 25, 2025; and Episode 8, the finale, for December 31 in the Americas. In many European, African and Asian markets, the corresponding dates were December 27, 2025, and January 1, 2026. Check Netflix’s schedule for territory-specific timing.

The season’s broader setup is fall 1987, after the Rifts opened and Hawkins was placed under lockdown. Vecna’s location and intentions are initially unknown. That premise explains the conditions surrounding Part 1, while its ending leaves Will’s new capability, Holly’s fate and Vecna’s plan as the central questions leading into the remaining episodes.
