The show does not confirm whether she survives: Mike imagines a possible escape, and the creators leave that possibility unresolved. The 125-minute finale closes with a quieter look at where the surviving friends’ lives take them.
What happens in “The Rightside Up”?
The eighth and final episode of Season 5 brings the friends’ fight against Vecna and the Mind Flayer to its conclusion. Their plan is tied to destroying the Upside Down itself, turning the battle into a desperate effort to defeat the threat and escape before that world collapses.
The fight is framed as an ensemble effort rather than a victory delivered by one hero alone. Matt Duffer described the approach as resembling a Dungeons & Dragons campaign: “Everyone contributes in some meaningful way … in that sense, it also feels very much like the climax of a Dungeons & Dragons campaign, where every character has a special skill, and they’re able to bring it to this final fight.”
Joyce delivers the decisive blow
Joyce kills Vecna with an axe. Ross Duffer told Netflix Tudum that Joyce felt right for the moment because she was the first person in Season 1 to take action and believe that something strange was happening. The choice gives the conclusion a clear connection to the series’ beginnings.

The Upside Down collapses—and Eleven stays behind
The group triggers the destruction of the Upside Down and returns to MAC-Z before the world collapses. Eleven remains behind and appears to vanish with it. That image is the finale’s most consequential uncertainty, not a confirmed death.
Does Eleven survive?
The episode deliberately does not settle the question. In the final Dungeons & Dragons game, Mike imagines that Kali used an illusion to help Eleven escape to a remote village. It is a hopeful explanation offered through Mike’s imagination, not a confirmation from the story that she survived. The Duffer Brothers have said they wanted viewers to decide whether his account is true.

That ambiguity lets the finale give the group a goodbye without converting Eleven’s disappearance into a definitive answer. Viewers can read Mike’s version as a genuine possibility or as the story he needs to believe.
Where do the other characters end up?
The closing scenes look beyond the battle to the friends’ lives after Hawkins. Netflix’s finale explainer describes a future for each of them:

The finale sets up a tension between spectacle and closure. The climactic fight has to resolve a large supernatural conflict, while Joyce’s role and the later character coda provide the more personal payoff. For viewers invested in the original group, the final stretch shifts attention from defeating a monster to seeing the friends move forward.

Those two aims do not land equally for every viewer. GamesRadar+ critic Alex Zalben was critical of the action scenes, visual effects and final battle, but found the character-focused closing stretch emotionally satisfying. That is one critic’s mixed assessment, not evidence of a wider critical or audience consensus.
The ending’s clearest resolution belongs to the group’s fight and the characters’ futures. Eleven’s fate remains open by design, so the finale offers emotional closure without answering its most painful question outright.
