- In 1980s Indiana a group of friends witness supernatural forces and government exploits. In searching for answers, they unravel a series of mysteries.
Will’s disappearance began the series, and Netflix frames the approaching anniversary of that event as part of the final season’s setup. Eleven, raised at Hawkins Lab, is closely tied to her friends and to Hopper, her adoptive father. Netflix’s guide says her priority is protecting the people she considers family.
Max ended Season 4 in a coma. In Netflix’s cast-guide interview, Sadie Sink describes her character as changed and says the friends hold on to a small glimmer of hope. That is the setup as discussed in the official guide, not a separate medical claim about her condition.

The older teens and allies
Nancy is an investigative, action-oriented member of the Wheeler family, while Jonathan is Will’s older brother and Nancy’s partner. Steve, Nancy’s former boyfriend, remains an ally to the group; Netflix highlights his bond with Dustin in the season’s character context. Robin, Steve’s friend, joins the wider community effort against Vecna. Vickie, a Hawkins High marching-band member introduced in Season 4, is connected to Robin.
Erica is Lucas’s sharp-tongued younger sister, and the guide notes her ties to both the Scoops Troop and Hellfire Club. Murray, formerly an investigative journalist, has helped Joyce and Hopper. Netflix’s detailed guide calls the character Murray Bauman; the Media Center short listing uses Murray.

The adults and the threat
Joyce and Hopper again lead the adult side of the Hawkins investigation. Hopper is also Eleven’s adoptive father. Lt. Colonel Sullivan, a military figure introduced in Season 4, returns in the detailed Tudum guide.
Vecna is also Henry Creel, known as One. Netflix’s season synopsis says he is missing at the start of the season, while the group intends to find and kill him. His history connects him to Eleven and Hawkins Lab.

Linda Hamilton as Dr. Kay
Hamilton plays Dr. Kay, the scientist overseeing the military occupation of Hawkins. Netflix says she is hunting Eleven alive, distinguishing her role from the returning military figures.
Jake Connelly as Derek Turnbow
Connelly plays Derek, a classmate of Holly Wheeler. Netflix’s guide describes him as a bully, not Holly’s friend.

- A love letter to the ‘80s classic genre films that captivated a generation, STRANGER THINGS is a thrilling drama set in the seemingly normal Midwestern town of Hawkins, Indiana.
Alex Breaux as Lt. Robert Akers
Breaux plays Akers, a military lieutenant working at Dr. Kay’s lab who is also involved in the hunt for Eleven. Netflix’s season announcement shortens his name to Lt. Akers.
Who plays Holly Wheeler in Season 5?
Nell Fisher plays Holly Wheeler in Season 5. Holly is not a newly invented character: she is the youngest Wheeler and has appeared in earlier seasons. Netflix’s final-season guide gives her a more prominent story, describing her search for belonging and the comfort she finds in an imaginary friend. Fisher’s casting makes Holly a returning character portrayed by a new performer, rather than one of the season’s newly introduced characters.
What is the Season 5 story setup?
Spoiler-light setup: Netflix places the final season in fall 1987. Hawkins is scarred by the Rifts opened at the end of Season 4 and has been put under military quarantine. The group is united in its effort to find Vecna, whose whereabouts and plans are unknown; the government’s hunt for Eleven pushes her back into hiding. The season is the fifth and final chapter of the series.
Netflix announced an eight-episode season. Its published episode list includes “The Crawl,” “The Vanishing of …,” “The Turnbow Trap,” “Sorcerer,” “Shock Jock,” “Escape from Camazotz,” “The Bridge,” and “The Rightside Up.” The second title is printed with an ellipsis in the announcement.
The original release plan divided the episodes into three volumes: four in the first, three on Christmas, and the finale on New Year’s Eve, each announced for 5 p.m. Pacific Time. Netflix’s Jan. 1, 2026 coverage roundup said the finale and every episode were then streaming. That dated statement does not establish present availability in every territory.
