Eddie is dead, Max is alive but comatose, and Vecna is missing—not defeated. The season’s key reveal is that Vecna is Henry Creel, also known as One, whose history is inseparable from Eleven and Hawkins Lab.
Where everyone is when Season 4 begins
It is spring 1986, six months after the Battle of Starcourt. The group is scattered: Eleven and the Byers family are in California, Hopper is imprisoned in Russia, and the friends in Hawkins are trying to navigate high school, grief and changing relationships. Their distance is more than physical; they are no longer operating as one team.
A new threat begins targeting teenagers. Vecna traps victims in visions shaped by their fears and guilt, then kills them. In Hawkins, the remaining friends investigate the murders and connect them to the Creel House and openings between Hawkins and the Upside Down. In California and Nevada, Eleven takes part in the Nina project to recover her powers. In Russia, Joyce and Murray work to free Hopper. The separate efforts eventually feed into a coordinated attempt to reach Vecna.
Who Vecna is—and why Eleven is central
Vecna is Henry Creel, also known as One, a psychic subject from Hawkins Lab. His story is bound to Eleven’s: their confrontation at the lab sent him into the other dimension, where he became the creature now attacking Hawkins. The reveal turns Vecna’s campaign from an unexplained series of murders into a threat rooted in Eleven’s past.

His attacks also serve a larger purpose. Each murder tears at the boundary between the worlds, creating openings that are part of Vecna’s plan. Stopping him therefore means more than surviving his visions: the group must prevent the gates from joining.
Why the finale’s plan fails
The friends mount an assault on Vecna across the connected fronts of Hawkins, the Upside Down and Eleven’s psychic battle. They manage to wound him, but they do not stop the fourth killing. Eddie stays behind in the Upside Down to distract the Demobats and dies.
