In an October 30, 2025, Entertainment Weekly interview syndicated by Yahoo, Matt and Ross Duffer explained what the Stranger Things 5 trailer revealed: Vecna has rebuilt his damaged body, Hawkins is under military quarantine, and Will’s disappearance remains central to the ending. These were pre-release teases about the final season, not a current guide to its availability.
What did the trailer reveal about Vecna?
Ross Duffer said Vecna “has rebuilt his body” after the injuries Nancy inflicted at the end of Season 4. The process had not left him unmarked: Ross noted that visible holes remained.
Matt Duffer said the redesign was intended to make Vecna scarier and let him attack in the physical world as well as through the mind. The comments describe the creators’ intent for the trailer-era version of the character, rather than offering a neutral assessment of the design.
Why is Will central to the final season?
Matt Duffer said the story needed to return to Will because it began with his disappearance: “Because the story really began with Will and his disappearance, it felt, in order to go full circle, it needed to really end with him in so many ways.” In the interview, Matt also said the season would address why Will was taken.

What was the setting in the trailer-era explanation?
The Duffers placed the story in fall 1987. After gates opened, Hawkins was under military quarantine. The interview also described military activity around the Upside Down as initially mysterious to both the characters and viewers.
What questions did the creators say the season would answer?
The interview framed two major mysteries for the final season: what the Upside Down is and why Will was taken. Those were pre-release promises about the story’s direction, not answers supplied by the trailer interview itself.

Matt and Ross Duffer also characterized the season as “brutal” and “violent.” Those descriptions were the creators’ own comments in the October 30, 2025 interview, not a critical review.
