Spoilers for the complete series, including Stranger Things 5. Reddit discussions before the finale raised a few genuinely testable ideas about Will, Vecna, and the Upside Down—but the available threads do not establish a ranked or representative top ten. Looking back, the strongest theories are the ones that grew from details already in the story; broader claims, especially that the whole series was imagined, needed far more assumptions. These are an editorial selection from individual fan discussions, with hindsight judgments clearly separated from what fans predicted.
What the theories had to explain
Netflix set the final season in fall 1987, after the rifts scarred Hawkins. Its official setup says Vecna has disappeared, the government has quarantined the town and is hunting Eleven, and the group must unite to find Vecna and end the threat. That premise made Will’s connection to the Upside Down and Vecna a reasonable place to look for clues, but it did not itself confirm any particular fan explanation. The Reddit posts discussed below are individual, pre-finale conversations, not a poll. They support several related themes, not ten distinct, equally substantiated predictions. The verdicts are retrospective analysis of how those ideas fit the completed story—not claims that Reddit reached a consensus or that the creators endorsed a theory.
Will, Vecna, and the Upside Down
1. Will’s connection to Vecna would matter in the final conflict
One thread speculated about a hidden connection between Will and Vecna, building on the story’s established link between Will and the Upside Down. A separate discussion also treated Will’s connection as a plausible final-season direction. Hindsight: This was a grounded prediction insofar as it grew from Will’s history rather than introducing a wholly new premise. But a connection is not the same as a specific mechanism, and the official setup did not say Will was secretly linked to Vecna in a new way. The theory’s plausibility depended on what the episodes showed, not on the fact that fans proposed it.
2. Will could be a conduit or point of access to the Upside Down
Commenters considered Will’s unusual relationship to the Upside Down as a possible way the final conflict might unfold. That is a narrower and more testable idea than saying Will secretly controls the realm: it predicts that his established connection would have practical importance.
Hindsight: Treat this as a useful interpretive lens, not a confirmed rule of the show. A character’s past exposure can make a prediction feel earned, but it does not prove that the story will turn that exposure into a new power or plot device.
3. Will might sacrifice himself
The “logically could happen” thread included speculation about a possible sacrifice. Will’s long association with the danger made the idea emotionally legible, but emotional fit alone is not evidence that an ending is foreshadowed.

Hindsight: This prediction required more than the basic Will-Upside Down connection: it assumed the story would resolve that connection through death. The official setup promised a final battle, not a particular character’s fate. A sacrifice theory should therefore be judged by the episodes’ actual choices and consequences, not by how tragic or dramatic it sounds.
4. Vecna’s mind could trap or absorb Will
A Reddit user asked whether Will might “disintegrate within Vecna’s mind.” The phrasing points to a specific danger—Will being lost inside Vecna’s mental world—rather than simply another claim that the two characters are connected.
Hindsight: It was a vivid possibility, but it depended on a particular mental-world mechanism. The thread records speculation, not confirmation that Vecna’s mind works this way or that Will would meet this fate.
5. Will’s connection could help the group locate Vecna
With Vecna missing in Netflix’s official premise, fans had a concrete story problem to solve: how could the characters find him? A theory that Will’s connection might help locate or reach Vecna links a known character detail to that explicit setup.

Hindsight: This has more explanatory focus than a vague prediction that Will would “be important.” It still needs evidence from the episodes to establish how the connection works; the synopsis makes the search for Vecna relevant, not Will’s role in it inevitable.
What the Upside Down’s apparent stasis might mean
6. The realm’s lack of visible aging could be a clue
One Reddit discussion asked why the Upside Down appeared not to have aged since Will disappeared. The question notices a world detail and invites an explanation, but a discrepancy is not automatically proof of a particular hidden cause.
Hindsight: This was a sensible question to bring to the final season because it concerned how the fictional world works. It becomes a theory only when paired with a prediction about what the detail means. Without that additional step, it is an observation rather than a complete explanation.
7. Will’s disappearance could be tied to the realm’s apparent state
Because the thread raised the Upside Down’s apparent stasis alongside Will’s disappearance, one possible reading was that the two details were connected. That would give a Will-focused interpretation more reach than a theory about his personal danger alone.

Hindsight: The connection is an inference, not something established by the question itself. It needs to explain the setting’s details without treating every unexplained feature as proof of Will’s role.

8. Henry’s relationship with the Mind Flayer may involve a choice
The stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow provides additional context for Henry. Matt Duffer said the creators were interested in what happened after the moment Henry connected with the Mind Flayer—whether he fought it off or embraced it. Hindsight: The distinction between influence and choice matters: it can change how a viewer interprets Henry without proving a fan prediction about the final conflict. Duffer also said the play offers insight into Henry’s backstory without being essential Season 5 viewing; it is supplementary context, not a prerequisite for understanding the season.
9. A phylactery-like object or mechanism could protect Vecna
In the “could logically happen” thread, commenters used the fantasy concept of a phylactery as an analogy for a possible way Vecna might survive or remain protected. The analogy is a fan-made prediction, not a rule established by Netflix’s premise or the creator interview.

Hindsight: A hidden survival mechanism can explain why a villain is difficult to defeat, but it introduces a new assumption. It is persuasive only if the episodes supply evidence for the mechanism and show how it operates; resemblance to a familiar fantasy trope is not evidence on its own.
The biggest leap: was the whole story imagined?
10. The series could be framed as an imagined story or D&D campaign
One Reddit thread floated a broad imagined-story framing, including the possibility of a Dungeons & Dragons campaign. Commenters pushed back that such an explanation struggles to account for information and characters beyond Will’s perspective. The thread includes both the proposal and objections
Hindsight: This is a much larger claim than saying Will’s experience shaped the story. It would need to explain the series’ events beyond one character’s viewpoint, while also earning the reveal rather than using it to dismiss what came before. The objections in the thread identify that explanatory burden; disagreement is not proof that the theory is either true or false.
How to judge a pre-finale theory in hindsight
A memorable prediction is not necessarily a well-supported one. Four questions help distinguish a theory that follows the story from one that mainly adds an appealing possibility:

Will’s known history provides a stronger starting point than an entirely new rule introduced to make a prediction work.
- How much does it explain? A theory that connects a character detail to a real story problem has more reach than one that merely redescribes a mystery.
- How many assumptions does it add? The more unseen mechanisms or hidden premises it requires, the more evidence it needs.
- Can the episodes test it? A specific prediction can be confirmed or contradicted by what happens; a flexible claim that someone will matter is harder to evaluate.
Applied to these Reddit discussions, Will’s established connection and the question of the Upside Down’s state were reasonable starting points. A sacrifice, mental-world trap, or phylactery-like device required a more specific outcome or mechanism. The imagined-campaign idea faced the broadest explanatory burden. Those are judgments about fit and assumptions, not popularity rankings.
