Stranger Things 5 is set in fall 1987, according to Netflix’s official synopsis. That confirms the story moves forward to a later year, but the synopsis does not establish an exact one-year gap. The fifth and final season premiered in 2025 in three parts; the finale’s local release date was January 1, 2026, in some territories.
What year is Stranger Things 5 set in?
Netflix places the season in fall 1987. Hawkins is scarred by the opening of the rifts, and the returning characters are trying to find and kill the missing Vecna. The government has quarantined Hawkins and is hunting Eleven. Netflix frames the conflict around the anniversary of Will’s disappearance and describes the story as the final battle. That confirms a later-year setting, but not an exact one-year time jump: the synopsis names fall 1987 without specifying how many months or days have passed since the events of season four. It is more precise to say season five is set in fall 1987 than to claim the gap is exactly one year.
When did the final season premiere?
Netflix released the eight-episode final season in three parts. For the United States, all three release moments were scheduled for 5 p.m. Pacific. Netflix listed the following dates: official release schedule.

The later local dates reflect the shared global release time: 5 p.m. Pacific fell on the next calendar day in those territories. The season premiered in 2025, although the finale arrived in 2026 by local date in some markets. For a particular country, check Netflix’s schedule for that territory.
What to know about the finale
Netflix reported that the finale ran 2 hours and 5 minutes. It also announced limited screenings in more than 500 theaters across the United States and Canada, tied to the December 31, 2025 release. Why the season revisits unresolved mysteries
Series co-creator Ross Duffer said that some remaining mythology questions would be held for major reveals in the final season: “The last remaining questions that are answered in that document, we’ve punted a couple of those to have some big reveals in Season 5.” He added that the reveals would affect what the season was about. The remark appeared in Netflix Tudum’s July 16, 2025 teaser coverage.
