The “Yakuza L.A. Noire” comparison captures the mood of Stranger Than Heaven’s Summer Game Fest 2025 trailer—not a confirmed detective-game format. The reveal paired period Japanese cityscapes and hard-hitting street fights with smoky nightlife and noir styling. It did not establish an investigation system or a connection to L.A. Noire.
Project Century became Stranger Than Heaven
SEGA announced on June 9, 2025 that STRANGER THAN HEAVEN was the official title of Project Century, first teased at The Game Awards 2024. SEGA described it as a completely new title from Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, the team behind the Like a Dragon and Virtua Fighter series. The title was revealed at Summer Game Fest on June 6, 2025, according to SEGA’s announcement and contemporaneous coverage from Game Informer.
Why the trailer feels like Yakuza meets L.A. Noire
The Yakuza side: RGG action and heightened crime drama
The studio lineage and the trailer’s physical confrontations invite comparison with RGG’s Like a Dragon games. The reveal showed hard-hitting street fighting in historical settings, rather than establishing that the new game belongs to the Like a Dragon continuity. SEGA calls it a new title, and its official materials do not identify it as a sequel or spin-off.
The L.A. Noire side: period atmosphere, not confirmed detective play
Game Informer characterized the trailer’s style as Like a Dragon with 20th-century noir flair. GameSpot described period nightlife, a smoky nightclub, and glimpses of violent action. Those details support the noir comparison as a description of visual tone. They do not confirm a detective protagonist, casework, clue gathering, or an L.A. Noire-style investigation loop. The two games are not presented as connected.

What the 2025 trailer actually showed
Contemporaneous reports described a gameplay and title trailer moving between settings in 1915 and 1943. Its imagery included period city streets, fighting, and a nightclub performance. GameSpot also noted a moment that appeared to offer mercy; treating that moment as proof of a full morality system would go beyond what the trailer establishes.
- Shown or reported: period settings, street fights, nightlife, and a choice-like moment.
- Suggested by the style: crime drama with a noir-inflected atmosphere.
- Not established by the clips: a complete detective or investigation system, the full scope of player choices, or the final breadth of gameplay.
What SEGA clarified in 2026
In its May 7, 2026 overview, SEGA described an action adventure whose story spans 50 years across five eras and cities. The premise begins in San Francisco in 1915 with Makoto Daito, a teenager born to an American father and Japanese mother, who travels to Japan after his parents die. SEGA calls the settings cities inspired by places from Japan’s past—a “Japan that might have been.”

These official details broaden the picture beyond the 2025 trailer’s crime-noir impression; they do not turn the game into a confirmed detective adventure. See SEGA’s overview.

It is not an official genre label: Stranger Than Heaven is described by SEGA as an action adventure, and the available official details do not confirm detective gameplay or a shared franchise continuity with either comparison.
