The professors suspected many had used an AI chatbot to write them, projected examples for the class, and turned the episode into a lesson about academic integrity. Reports say students were not disciplined; the instructors’ suspicions about individual emails were not independently verified as forensic findings.
What happened in the classroom
The incident took place in IS 107: Data Science Discovery, co-taught by University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign instructors Karle Flanagan and Wade Fagen-Ulmschneider. The Daily Illini reported that the course had about 1,200 students across two sections and met three times each week. The Daily Illini’s account describes how instructors noticed students answering time-sensitive participation questions despite appearing to be absent. Some students had reportedly been tipped off by classmates about when questions would appear.
Flanagan contacted more than 100 students about answering while absent, according to the newspaper. The issue at the center of the story was therefore the apparent mismatch between physical attendance and participation responses—not simply the writing style of the later emails.
Why the apologies raised suspicion
Instructors began receiving messages with repeated language, notably “I sincerely apologize.” Flanagan recalled telling Futurism: “They said, ‘Dear Professor Flanagan, I want to sincerely apologize,’” Futurism reported. Fagen-Ulmschneider described the recurring wording to The Daily Illini: “Exactly the same phrase: ‘I sincerely apologize for my misuse of the clicker,’ and then a third and a fourth and a fifth, and all of a sudden we had tons of emails that looked almost identical and realized that they were likely not actually written by our students.”

Futurism characterized the “overwhelming majority” of nearly a hundred apology emails as appearing AI-written. That is a qualitative assessment in its reporting, not a measured detection rate. The similarity prompted the professors’ suspicion that students had used AI; it does not establish that every email was AI-generated or identify a particular tool in each case.
How the professors responded
Rather than pursue disciplinary action, the instructors displayed examples of the similar apologies in class and treated the episode as a teaching moment. Fagen-Ulmschneider told The Daily Illini, “We take academic integrity very seriously.” Flanagan put the lesson more pointedly in Futurism: “Life lesson: if you’re going to apologize, don’t use ChatGPT to do it.”

Both reports say students were not disciplined. The public accounts describe the instructors’ classroom response, but do not establish a formal university finding about each student’s conduct or email.
What the story does—and does not—show about AI and academic integrity
The episode illustrates two separate concerns: whether students answered participation questions while absent, and whether their subsequent apologies were written with AI assistance. The reports describe the instructors’ observations and suspicions, not a technical examination that proved who wrote each message. Similar phrasing can raise questions, but it is not by itself conclusive proof of AI use.

Nor does this incident establish the precise campus policy that applied to AI-assisted apologies. Secondary coverage mentioned uncertainty around an AI-specific rule, but the cited accounts do not verify the current University of Illinois policy or provide a primary policy document. The reliable takeaway is narrower: the instructors framed the incident as an academic-integrity lesson and chose not to discipline students, according to the reporting.

The apologies drew attention because they followed the attendance concern and appeared to repeat the same polished phrase. Instructors who expect a sincere apology may reasonably see a templated message as missing the point: it can sound detached from the specific action being acknowledged. But the reporting’s stronger evidence is the repeated wording and the professors’ reaction—not independent confirmation of which messages came from AI.
